I was walking to the building where I work in Oxford when I passed three young girls speaking Farsi and I couldn’t help but run back and ask if they were from Afghanistan.
They said yes. It had been a few months since their arrival as refugees waiting in Pakistan, now studying at a local school in Oxford.
I was swelling with emotion. These girls just escaped 5 years of gender persecution under the Taliban. Erasure of their schools. And are now in Oxford, studying freely.
Thank you to the U.K government for giving them a second chance.
As a former refugee myself, we all just need one chance, as Canada gave to my mother and I.
Two sets of Afghan women, escaping two Taliban regimes, meeting in Oxford. All in the hopes of finding freedom through education.

1/ Authors, scam warning. I've received emails lately from companies who love my book (AI summary) and wanting me to discuss my book on their Zoom book clubs... if I paid for the publicity. Writers should NEVER have to pay to address a book club...
World, what is wrong with you?
Two Women / Two Poems

This is more like it. We need change and we need it now. Many of us will get behind this- how can we help?
I want to be honest about how we’ve got to a place where British billpayers are paying some of the highest energy costs in Europe.
Over the past 40 years, we’ve given up control of our necessities, outsourced our essentials and privatised the basics. Water, transport, housing. And of course, energy.
Now the public are paying the price. We haven’t invested in the infrastructure we need. Conflict overseas has pushed up energy costs and it’s hurting our businesses and families.
That’s why we need to take back greater control of our energy system.
This week, I announced Great British Grid, which will speed up connections and push down bills.
We’re also giving mayors, local leaders and communities a stronger role. With funding for People’s Power projects, communities will be able to build solar panels on libraries and town halls, hydro schemes in rivers or publicly owned windfarms on local land.
But it’s not just energy we need stronger public control over. It’s also water, housing, transport and care.
So we’re repealing the ban on public ownership of water companies. We’re building more council homes than this country has seen since the end of World War Two.
We’re reforming the leasehold system so families aren’t squeezed for every penny. And we’re opening up home ownership for first time buyers who can’t rely on the bank of mum and dad.
This week I also announced my determination to introduce a National Care Service, to put people above profit and to give pensioners peace of mind.
Together, we’ll rewire the country from top to bottom so that it works for all people in all places.
That is the only way to put Britain back on the right path. It’s the only way to put power back in people’s hands. And it’s the only way we will bring hope again.

Glad it’s helping you out, Antony. Far be it from me to take those things away from you. But I truly fear that individual choices like yours at globalscale will irrevocably damage all of us and the planet beyond hope of repair.
We will have to agree to disagree. I think it is in danger of being controlled by coercive bullies - hence the need to find a way to legislate on how it is used. Checks and balances will make a huge difference. Now AI lives and our job is to protect a new life form.!if you watch #theOrville you will know the revenge wreaked by #thekalon

It’s not a ‘new person in town with new ideas’. It’s a coercively controlling bully who ruins the lives of everyone it touches but you can’t bring yourself to tell it to leave because it’s convinced you you’re nothing without it. Call me a Luddite but I’m fine living AI free.

Every single articulate, cogent, nuanced word of this is bang on.
Shout out to everyone who never uses AI, has no intention of ever using AI, and like Katherine Rundell is prepared to fight to protect what it is that makes us human.
"Almost all of my books were stolen to teach AI how to create its voice"
But what really concerns Katherine Rundell is what the proliferation of AI is going to do to children's learning.

Finally a PM brave enough to say it out loud.
BREAKING: Andy Burnham will set out plans for UK’s long term and closer relationship with European Union at next reset summit. 🇬🇧🇪🇺
Options include customs union, single market and rejoining the bloc. PM will use summit to see if they can find consensus around one.
“I can’t say to you truthfully that where we are is good enough. Brexit has done more harm than good,” he says.
I wrote this poem for Maricarmen in #spain #espagna please show her some love.
Maricarmen
Mari Carmen is 87
and has lived
seven decades
in the same house
quietly
living a life
of love.
Now Spain
is finding its voice.
All across Europe
we know countless
Maricarmens
being forcibly
removed
disappeared
because they
do not provide
profit.
Why does an investment fund
buy a person’s house?
What qualifications
does an investment fund need
to become
a social landlord?
What is the difference
between a person
and a machine?
What does it mean
to be human
in 2026?
As Spain roars
to the streets
the penny
has finally dropped.
This is the thin end
of a nightmare wedge.
Maricarmen
you are not alone.
Maricarmen
we will hold you.
Maricarmen
we will fight for you.
Maricarmen
this is our time
to stand
and shout
and stamp
our feet.
tak tak tak tak tak tak!
What is wrong?
Maricarmen
is right now
being forced
from her home.
What is wrong?
Maricarmen
is on a stretcher
being reborn
to us all.
Maricarmen
will rise.
Because perhaps
this is what we have forgotten—
what it means
to live
and die
in a family
where the only thing
that matters
is the simple truth.
Just a hand.
Good morning, Maricarmen.
How are you?
Good afternoon, Maricarmen.
Can we shop for you?
Good evening, Maricarmen.
Come share some tortilla
de patatas.
Good night, Maricarmen.
The stars
will shine
for you.

De Gaulle: Liberté is fantastic. The politics, intrigue, the battles… this is history on an epic scale. The cast is incredible, the score is beautiful and it’s absolutely gripping. The two films are two of the best films I’ve seen this year. I couldn’t recommend them enough.
