A lot of my power in my career as a software engineer has derived simply from ruthlessly testing my own shit. Just coded up a feature? Ok now run through it. Run through it again. Try to break it. Fix what you missed. Run through it again. I consider it a personal embarrassment if someone else finds something I missed. Ideally you have all of this testing happening in specs, but manual testing is still better than just throwing shit over the wall to someone else.

Your unique value is hard to find, because it's something that feels so easy you don't even realize you're doing it, but feels impossibly hard to everyone else. THEY experience your magic; you do not! The only way to find it is to listen when people tell you what it is.

“You can interrupt each other without being rude when you’re in person,” said Mr. Medina, whose company Outreach is now in the office on a hybrid basis. “In a Zoom conversation, you have to let somebody finish their thought.” nytimes.com/2023/06/20/busin… oops he said the quiet part 😬

"But now some business leaders say that the results of their remote work experiment are in. They feel emphatically that they need some in-person time." Ah yes, the scientific method: propose hypothesis, gather information, make an emotionally-based decision.

For me, watching people reflex-accept anything in the hopes that it "makes this problem go away" calls into question GitHub's stats about % of time developers accept Copilot's suggestions.

* People ask LLMs to write code * LLMs recommend imports that don't actually exist * Attackers work out what these imports' names are, and create & upload them with malicious payloads * People using LLM-written code then auto-add malware themselves vulcan.io/blog/ai-hallucinat…

It is hard to grasp for some engineers early in their careers what took them here won't take them there. Shipping features will probably can take you to senior, shipping 10x more features is not how you'll become a principal.

To Luiza's point, it's not the AGI we need to worry about - it's the thousands of tiny ways AI is already infiltrating our lives. Many are good, many are bad, and that's why we need regulation.
🔥Regulate us, but not really I've just left an in-person event with Sam Altman and Ilya Sutskever (OpenAI's CEO & Chief Scientist) at Tel Aviv University, and these were my impressions:

I'm always surprised that nearly all religious liberty cases seem to focus on denying LGBTQ people things that most other people can get: a website designed, a cake baked, a job offered. Moreover, few cases focus on far more basic religious beliefs that could be offended. Viz....
