I am really proud of @PrernaKhanna97 on her second paper on accessibility. Accessibility research is new to our lab and she is single handedly moving this research agenda forward.
Super excited to present our work on 3D hand gesture recognition for blind users at @acm_chi! We look at why existing hand gesture recognition systems don't scale for blind users and design an algorithm that works on a 3D representation of a gesture for blind users.

I know many people have noticed this already, but the Iceland Cricket twitter account is an absolute riot.
The Cricket World Cup is over and what a wonderful experience it has been. We gave it everything off the field and nothing on it, but it's fair to say a couple of the ten teams in the actual event can say the same. The land of fire and ice will one day play in a CWC.

1 million hours = 400 statisticians working full time for 1 year. R likely represents the work of 1000s of statisticians, many having contributed to R for their entire career. I'm not even factoring in millions of hours of field testing by the community.

Awesome students doing awesome things. Do check out this paper on how to make smartphone interactions accessible. I am very excited for this line of research.
Are smartphone interactions truly accessible to blind users? Check out our work "AccessWear: Making Smartphone Applications Accessible to Blind Users". I will be talking about this at @ACMMobiCom 2023 in Madrid, Spain 🇪🇸 today afternoon!

There are many ways to contribute to advances in AI. It is useful to recognize the ways in which using closed AI systems doesn't help reasonably reproducible research. These are important considerations for both individual researchers and the community as a whole.

We @sbucompsc started a comprehensive TA training program for our 300 TAs (across undergraduate, masters, and PhD TAs). This took a year in planning and executing but we pulled it off. The key to scaling was in engaging some fantastic PhD students (our inclusivity fellows)
Our TA training initiative in @sbucompsc is already seeing great results! Kudos to all involved especially our six Inclusive Computing Fellows. @stonybrooku @ArunaBalasubra9 @pfodorcs bit.ly/3AecY5l

We've also learnt a lot in the process in terms of what not to do (e.g., move our pedagogy session a couple of weeks up). The TAs and the fellows, as expected, have the best suggestions because they are the closest to the problems.
