That the Communist hammer and sickle isn’t commonly regarded as evil and offensive as the Nazi swastika is a failure of education.
“Dear Italian students, who today take to the streets carrying flags with the hammer and sickle and wearing T-shirts emblazoned with ‘CCCP’,” began an open letter in Italian by Lithuanian expat Neringa Budryt. “I would like to ask you a question: do you truly know what the symbols you carry represent? And do you know what would have happened to many of you had you openly demonstrated in countries living under the oppression of communist regimes? Let me tell you something. It is easy to display a red flag when, for you, communism is merely an abstract idea of equality, social justice, and rebellion against the system. It is easy to wear a T-shirt with "CCCP" on it when you have never experienced the reality of a communist regime. We come from that part of Europe where communism was not a T-shirt, a symbol of rebellion, or a romanticized notion of equality. It was the system in which we lived—a system we never chose. We know the history of Soviet repression, Stalinist purges, the Gulags, and mass deportations. Above all, we know the word "Siberia"—a place to which thousands of innocent people were forcibly deported, simply for thinking differently. In Siberia—amidst freezing cold, starvation, and forced labor—many lost their lives; those who survived carried the scars of that experience forever. Entire families were torn apart, and generations were denied the chance to live freely in their own homeland. In the countries of the Soviet bloc, censorship, political police, surveillance, and the suppression of dissent drastically curtailed individual freedoms. We grew up in a system where state control permeated even our daily lives. At school, we were required to wear the red necktie of the "Pioneers." We were monitored; they tracked where we went and even whether we attended church. Even faith—a choice that should belong to an individual’s own conscience—could become a cause for suspicion. We used to celebrate Christmas with our windows blacked out, to ensure no one would see us and report us. Because it was forbidden—just like so many other things: jeans, rock music, and all the symbols of a Western lifestyle. My mother returned from a Soviet labor camp. And do you know what happened to her? She was barred from continuing her education because she had been labeled an enemy of communism. Under a communist regime, you could not protest. You risked arrest, imprisonment, interrogation, persecution—and, in certain historical contexts, even death. In the Soviet Union and other communist regimes, political dissent could cost you your freedom and your life. Demonstrations independent of the authorities were not a guaranteed right; they were often suppressed by force. That is why it strikes me to see young Italians proudly displaying the hammer and sickle—symbols associated with regimes that persecuted and imprisoned millions of people. Today, you are free to take to the streets, shout against the government, criticize institutions, and wave your flags precisely because you live in a democracy that grants you these freedoms. Under an authoritarian regime of that kind, protesting against those in power could have landed you in prison. This is not about denying the existence of social injustices, inequalities, or the right to fight for a better world. You are free to take to the streets to demand a more just society—but you should not idealize a system that denied so many people the very things you are free to exercise today: the right to choose, to believe, to speak, and to dissent. Before wearing a T-shirt with "CCCP" on it, listen to those who experienced that world. Talk to the deportees and their descendants; read the accounts of those who endured the gulags and forced exile to Siberia. Learn what it meant to be stripped of your freedom, your home, your loved ones—and even any prospect of a normal life—simply because of your background or your beliefs. Before waving the hammer and sickle, please, study history thoroughly.”

If you truly *love* American cities, you MUST support strict enforcement of laws against anti-social behavior. Paying bus fares, red light cameras, camping on sidewalks, smoking on trains, off-leash dogs, etc etc If people want to do whatever they want, that’s FINE in the suburbs or the country on your own land. But it, fundamentally, cannot work in our densest places where people all have to co-operate in proximity. If we do not, it means cities will continue to be primarily for those able to avoid the annoyances ... the wealthy and/or child-free.
If we don’t change this … in 40 years we will look back on allowing dogs in downtowns the same way we look at cars: As a terrible mistake for how it molded dense urban environment for the benefit of a few ... by not properly pricing in public costs of the "free rider" dog owners and by changing the entire culture to accommodate them. My fear is by then (like with cars today) there will be too many ppl accustomed to the private benefits and impunity of living downtown with their dogs so we're only able to make marginal changes And that negative downstream effects (fewer kids, playgrounds, dirty sidewalks, dog attacks) will be baked in

What is the point of street outreach teams @DanielLurie if all that happens is services declined and people continue to leave themselves in harms way on the streets? How many times are people allowed to decline? Indefinitely?
Declined shelter. Today in SOMA. “Completed. Declined shelter moved along.”

Reminds me of the story @tfadell told in his book Build, of selling Neat to Google. Moral of the story - once the company is sold, it’s no longer something you have control of.

This morning at 6:50am, our street was woken to an explosion. A Toyota pickup truck caught fire. The flames engulfed 3 other nearby vehicles too. Thank you @SFFDPIO @SFPD for your incredibly fast response. The fire took over 30 minutes to fully extinguish. What would cause a car to catch fire like this? This is the second major fire with a vehicles source in the last 2 years here.

As far as I can tell, no one was injured. The damage could’ve been so much worse. At one point there was a river of fire flowing downhill from the flames as the fire was nearly impossible to extinguish.

Let me summarize: EVERY child under 18 direct owners in our best companies compounding for life. Real ownership not dependency. A new American birthright forevermore of $1000 in a free, lifetime investment acct. That’s it. Keep donating to charities. Keep paying taxes. Keep our sacred promise to social security. But only real ownership can unlock the full human potential of all families & close the wealth gap. Yes this will be a huge new employer benefits for 1000s of companies giving to kids of employees. Yes moms & dads & friends are already depositing 100s of millions small dollars at a time. Yes philanthropists love the idea of direct giving to America’s kids - full transparency, accountability, & high ROI. As Geoffrey Canada said to me last week - in 50 yrs of fighting poverty, kids are still poor. This is the FIRST thing I have ever seen that will change that forever. This has huge bi-partisan support. But kids are not Rs or Ds. They just want to live the American Dream. Invest America / 530A @TrumpAccounts will help them do just that! wow, this account is wild. are city officials not aware of ethics violations? is there any training they get on what is / isn't illegal?
Day 6 of the Sheng Thao trial. Prosecutors played a 2019 recording of then-Councilmember Sheng Thao talking to Andy Duong about a closed-session discussion on California Waste Solutions. She named names. “Noel, fucking Dan, and Loren kept bringing it up,” she said. “It was mainly Dan.” She told him Rebecca Kaplan was concerned and that Loren Taylor would “shut the fuck up” if Larry Reid stepped in. Then she added, “We don’t need people hearing us talk” and “We don’t want to be seen with you guys.” The same day the jury heard texts from Thao and Andre Jones about money. In December 2022 she told him to “pay the fucking rent” while PG&E was over $1,000 and the water bill was around $800. In January a check from Mario Juarez hit Jones’s account the same day she pressed him on rent. Later, after she was mayor, she texted that the power had been shut off and reconnection would cost $6,000. By November she was telling him to turn off the lights because she “cannot pay” a $3,000 bill. Barclay also walked through a roughly 100-page Evolutionary Homes group chat that never included Jones, plus emails and an org chart that left him off the government-relations side. A $35,000 check from the company still went to him in November 2023. On a separate recording Andy Duong told Thao, “You need to get your shit together. If you want to continue for another term, you better start acting right.” The defense started cross-examination by pointing out that Oakland never bought the housing units and never extended the recycling contract. One juror was excused. Trial continues next week.

this is always how the parasites defend their asset seizure: average joe, the middle class, poor kids. but none of these people are getting paid. your wealth will be seized and given to criminals, illegal aliens, and ro khanna's friends. suffering will increase. he won't care.
Looks like billionaires will stay and figure out a way to pay the tax. If we pass Prop 40, poor California kids can have healthcare. Gavin, can you and Sergey Brin stop with your fear-mongering of a billionaire exodus?

1/ pretty bad out there. We have to fix the last 50 years of software and internet sloppiness. Faster than adversaries can find the holes, and faster than we ship new ones (with agents!). CVEs went from ~4k a month to ~15k since April. That is not business as usual.

🚨 A question for Governor Newsom, Attorney General Bonta, and my Democrat colleagues: What number will it take to convince you we have an election security problem? New Jersey just admitted its DMV registered about 6,600 people who said they were NOT citizens. About 340 of them cast ballots. Right here in California, a former Lodi City Councilman was convicted after 23 voters were registered at his own home. In Compton, a judge threw out a city council election after finding illegal votes. It was decided by a single vote. California had nearly 1,400 murders last year. Nobody would say murder isn’t a problem until the number gets higher. So what’s the number for our elections? Because the people who count on clean elections are tired of waiting Stay informed. Stay involved. Share. Save California

Thats interesting. I've had meetings with Rec & Park leadership about getting funding to MLK Pool in Bayview, to bring it back to pre-pandemic levels (open 7 days a week) and increase much needed swimming lessons for kids. That annual cost would be only ~$500k, which they said they didn't have, and wouldn't figure out how to get...and yet...they can find $700k+ for stuff like this...toys for the west side road park?
WHAT THEY AREN’T TELLING YOU ABOUT THE “SUNSET DUNES” OP-ED Some hard facts facing Westside taxpayers and working families. Siphoned Prop A Bond Money & Debt: City Hall quietly siphoned $700,000 out of Prop A (the 2020 Health, Parks, and Streets Bond) to fund temporary skate spaces, fencing, and signage. Because bond funds carry long-term interest, taxpayers will actually pay back roughly $1.38 million for these surface activations, funds voters earmarked for citywide park safety, not unapproved highway marketing... 👇 openthestreets.wordpress.com… Vote YES on G. Share & Compromise. It's not all or nothing. SF can share.

I am an "all of the above" housing guy at this point. But it needs to be said: No one builds "affordable cars". Used cars are just new cars that got old. Same goes for housing. We don't have affordable housing today, because we didn't build market rate housing yesterday.
We’re working to solve California’s housing crisis. It was a pleasure to join Assemblymember @BuffyWicks, labor, local elected officials, and community members who are turning this site in El Cerrito into housing: public land next to a BART station, a 100% affordable building, homes built in a factory, and union labor on the job. It’s the first phase of a plan to turn BART parking lots into 743 homes. This is what building housing the right way looks like. Every Californian deserves a home they can afford, close to where they work.

Wait, so the state of California’s fiscal accountability stops at Malia’s office? And she can’t do more audits if not given tens of millions more? This is has to be a joke. Please get some startups to teach their teams how to use Claude for auditing. If she lives in the Bayview still she’s like a mile from YC and 5 from Anthropic offices to get actual help to scale efforts. This is the most lame answer I’ve ever heard from an elected official.
What happened to the audits on homelessness spending and the EDD promised by California State Controller Malia Cohen? She told me she didn't want to duplicate work of others in state government. She also told me her office needs more money to do audits:
