Long before children understand borders or national identity, they begin learning about the world through their families. The music they hear, the gestures they recognize and the stories they are told become some of their earliest connections to the places they come from.
For Raíces y Culture, @basseadx explores how cultural identity takes shape from childhood. In the animation, the word RAÍCES glows above an outstretched arm, while lines of colour ripple across the screen. The animation combines glowing imagery of roots and growth with an electronic soundtrack that evokes traditional Middle Eastern music.
Presented in Lisbon as part of Still Here, the work draws on the artist's description of culture as a child's “first map of the world,” formed through the traditions, symbols and stories inherited from earlier generations.

It's utterly ridiculous that we have all these supposed billionaire geniuses running around, and their greatest innovation of our lifetime has been stealing our personal data to sell us targeted ads.

- It's not just high schoolers, it's a large and diverse part of the population
- Immigration or not, this would happen
- Tired of fires (especially after last Summer) and destruction, but you can't sum up the movement to that
- Police brutality is super high and often unwarranted, starting when everything is peaceful. Also they have grenades that are banned everywhere else in Europe.
- You're seeing the result of a future (environmental, economic, social) that has been sacrificed for decades in exchange for short-termist selfishness
- France is massively corrupt, way more than people think (including French people). No one is up to the task. Gerontocracy makes things even harder
- It's a deep and unsolvable state of things. A complete overhaul is needed
Bonne chance à nous.

🧵 I am incredibly shocked and angry. Protests are happening all over France, yet somehow, suddenly, Muslims are responsible for everything. Sound familiar? It sounds disturbingly like the rhetoric of the 1930s.
