I can’t even begin to describe how stupid today’s referendum was - a megathread.

Thank you for your reporting and for setting out the truth here. All politicians pivot and prevaricate, but Smith is a MAGA-style narcissistic liar. Absolutely nothing she says can be trusted. Smith no doubt reckons that people are too ignorant or too exhausted to follow the facts. Her false claim that the law forced her to put this separation question on the ballot is calculated and cynical communication = demagoguery and disinformation. We can't accept this degree of dishonesty (and toxicity) in our politics.

A reminder that the law initially said two questions asking essentially the same thing could not be asked within five years. Then the Premier changed the legislation to get her preferred question about separating. She does that for separatists.
Danielle Smith throws Forever Canada under the bus, blaming them for the referendum: "If somebody doesn't want to put a vote forward, then they shouldn't start a petition campaign. If they're going to do that, then they have to understand that there are consequences to it."

That referendum sure wasn't worth the money, the division, the political goal of holding the UCP together. It was a political hoax. Column. calgaryherald.com/news/braid… #abreferendum #ableg #yyc #yeg #cdnpoli #abpoli

"The things we admire in men, kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling are the concomitants of failure in our system. And those traits we detest, sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism and self-interest are the traits of success."

Section 95 of the constitution already provides for concurrent jurisdiction over Immigration. If we wish to propose changes to legislation, we already have the ability to do so through our electoral choices in Edmonton and Ottawa (3/x)

If we begin tiering & dividing who Albertans & Canadians are and aren’t, we’ve already lost a fundamental reason for our existence, at least constitutionally, if not ontologically… (4/x)

I was born in Alberta in 1987. Electronic vote tabulators have existed my entire life. We aren’t using them because of a few anecdotal fantasies of brain dead hicks (2/x)

I want you to know there is goodness in the world. Embrace hope. Love is love. I'm glad you follow me and am sending hugs in a non-weird way. We need to (borrowing from Bruce Cockburn) to kick at the darkness until it bleeds daylight. All the best to you.

A tour de force for @netflix - #EastofEden is a stunning piece of television that needs to shine bright in this chaotic political moment.

"The rule of law is under vicious attack in this province and I am not the first, nor will I be the last, to call this out. When an institution is silent in the face of what is happening in this province, that silence is complicity." Another resignation at the Law Society.

With the latest provincial overreach, Danielle Smith is now ordering me how to vote at Calgary City Council. If I refuse, I risk losing my job. I want to work constructively with the province, even when we disagree. But we must be free to listen to residents and make fair decisions.

How did we get here? Pretty simple. Developers wanted greenfield projects but couldn’t win a city election, so they got the province to change the electoral rules. They still lost. So the UCP changed the policy for them. cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/…

Nine days before the referendum, Danielle Smith will be sharing a stage with two known separatists and someone who calls Indigenous deaths in residential schools a hoax. When someone shows you who they really are, believe them.

Rural Albertans, the UCP is taking advantage of you The referendum is going to cost $134,300,000 That’s: 22x the total $ in AB rural clinic grant pool 2x the rural hospital enhancement program The UCP is wasting $$$ instead of giving rural Albertans healthcare you need (1/3)
