I watched my husband walk into a house, kiss a woman at the door, and follow her upstairs. I watched it three times, hoping I was mistaken. Then I called his mother. I asked how she was feeling and whether Daniel had arrived safely. She sounded confused. “Daniel isn’t here, my dear. He hasn’t visited me in almost two months.” My hands began to shake. I thanked her and ended the call. For the next hour, I sat on the bed staring at our wedding photograph, trying to understand how the man I had loved for six years could lie so easily. Then I asked the question that had been haunting me since I called his mother. “Why did you tell me she was sick?” He finally looked me in the eyes. “Because I knew you’d never question a trip to see my mother. I needed an excuse to see the woman I never stopped loving.” I removed my wedding ring and placed it on the table. But before I could walk away, he said: “There’s one more thing you need to know.
