#invention #trivia: sometimes success is born from failure. In 1957, Alfred W. Fielding and Marc Chavannes were trying to invent plastic wallpaper with a paper backing. Though unsuccessful, what they came up with was a perfect packing material - Bubble Wrap, introduced in 1960.

Born May 27, 1897: John Douglas Cockcroft (d: 1967), a U.K. 🇬🇧 physicist who, along with Irish 🇮🇪physicist Ernest Walton (1903-1995), received the 1951 Nobel Prize in Physics for splitting the atomic nucleus. Cockcroft was instrumental in the development of nuclear power. ⚛️

Issued #OTD, April 27, 1880: the 1st @uspto #patent🔻for an electric hearing aid (called a Device for Aiding the Deaf to Hear) was granted to Francis D. Clarke & M.G. Foster. It worked by amplifying & passing sound through the skull to the inner ear. It was never commercialized.

#OTD Mar 30, 1858, Hymen L. Lipman (1817-1893) was granted the 1st #patent🔻for a pencil w/an eraser. This is why March 30 is #NationalPencilDay. However, in 1875, the #SCOTUS declared the patent invalid, ruling the invention was just a combo of 2 known things with no new use. ✏️
