One very interested session @capcutapp CapCut World. At the CREAITE AI film competition screening, we got to watch a selection of the films and hear a talk by Ryoichi Wada, co-original creator of One Cut of the Dead—a film I loved the film so much since I watched. Almost 18 years ago. Ryoichi is also a juror for the CapCut AI Festival – CREAITE. His talk, “The Gate Moved,” explored how AI is changing the challenges filmmakers and creators face, from making the work to making decisions. He spoke from four different perspectives: • Co-original creator of the indie hit One Cut of the Dead (2017). • Founder of TOKYO EPIC, an AI-native anime and IP studio in Tokyo. • Juror for CapCut’s CREAITE AI competition, reviewing more than a hundred entries. • Japan Representative for the World AI Film Festival. There’s a lot I’d like to share. 1 - Great work draws us into the story until we forget about the tools. After watching more than a hundred entries, he found that the strongest films pulled him in so completely that he stopped thinking about which AI tools they used. With weaker work, the tool’s signature was often the first thing he noticed. In his view, strong work shared three things: a reason to exist, a clear creative direction sustained throughout, and something meaningful to offer on a second viewing. That second viewing is especially interesting. Once the novelty wears off, it becomes much clearer whether the story, pacing, and emotion still hold up. He also pointed out common traps: beautiful images without a point of view, technique that overshadows the story, characters with no real obstacles, or shots that are all pushed to maximum intensity. When everything is a peak, it’s hard for anything to feel special. 2 - The easier it becomes to create, the more our choices matter. An experiment that once took days can now take minutes. That gives us far more options, and shifts more of our work toward shaping the brief, comparing, selecting, sequencing, and discarding. The time we save should also go toward making better decisions. Otherwise, we may simply produce more work without becoming any clearer about what we want to say. He used the example of generating a hundred versions and choosing just one. The rejected versions have value if they help sharpen our standards. Understanding what doesn’t belong is part of developing a style, too. 3 - Setting constraints helps reveal the creator’s identity. Before opening a tool, he suggested choosing a few things first: a palette, a visual language for the camera, an emotional direction, or a rule to maintain throughout the work. When almost anything is possible, it’s easy to follow whatever beautiful images the tool offers and gradually lose direction. Clear constraints help keep our choices coherent. He also predicted that by 2028, beautiful generated shots would be everywhere. A skill that would remain valuable is keeping characters, worlds, rules, and emotions consistent across hundreds of shots—and building enough trust that audiences want to return. 4 - Creators need to think like producers, too. As tools allow us to do more independently, we also take on more responsibility for the whole project: what to make, who it’s for, how much to spend, when to call it finished, and how to release it. His advice on budgeting was very practical. Budget AI costs per project, include the cost of generations you don’t use, and invest where the audience can actually feel the difference. When judging value, compare the costs against the corresponding traditional production costs, rather than looking only at a monthly subscription fee. A clear brief and good judgment can improve both quality and cost efficiency. Continue 👇
