Thank you to all the families and scholars who joined our Calm, Capable & Confident Evening. We explored ways to build resilience, support positive mental health and achieve in school. Thank you to our community partners for their invaluable support and expertise. 💙
Exceptional piece by @daisychristo. Really interesting exploration of the policy landscape.
A lot of people have asked me: why are the govt trying to undo the edu policies that have made England so successful?
Latest Substack does not attempt to answer that question, because I don't know the answer!
But it has some related comment.

The PISA 2025 results are out today. Some quick insights.
- The major story is very significant global decline. The last PISA study was in 2022, and saw big declines in reading and maths scores from 2018. Obviously the pandemic played a part.
- But this 2025 round has seen further falls even from the 2022 lows!
Things haven't gone back to normal post-pandemic - they've got worse.
Every generation thinks the generation below is less smart - but this time they might be right!

New PISA data out
England is now top ten in all three areas (reading, maths, science) and the second highest performing country outside of east Asia (after Estonia).
This is a huge public policy success.

What a brilliant day welcoming our new Year 7s across our secondary schools! Y7 Onboarding saw scholars practising new routines, setting high expectations and celebrating with plenty of joy and rewards. Values lived. A brilliant start to secondary school!

@chalkandtalk1 flying the @astreaacademies flag today at @researchED1 #rED26! Plus a big contingent from Astrea attending, including 15 from @AstreaErnulf @ebiThomasJ. Have a fantastic day everyone!
Looking forward to presenting at this year’s @researchED1 conference today! I’ll be exploring why transition matters, what the evidence tells us about this pivotal point, and what schools could do to strengthen the move to secondary school. Join me for Session 3 in M26. #rED26
