okay but i am laughing at the idea of a stalker romance where both the guy and the girl are stalking each other. that’s true love baby.

i’m so tired of natalie wynn posting obvious ragebait and then acting dense when people react. but what i can’t figure out is if it’s just pure engagement farming bc rent is due, or if she has some psychosexual fixation and gets off imagining herself as a victim of an angry mob.

I want to help people interpret this tweet because many are struggling. When I say “worse than I thought” I’m proposing a counterfactual situation: what I expected Trump 2 to be. I was expecting Hitler. Trump 2 is very bad, but not Hitler bad. I therefore am massively relieved that it’s not Hitler bad. So, although it is bad, though millions have died (as expected), the situation is much less bad than my expectation of how bad it was going to be. The fact that my expectations of how bad it was going to be are worse than what it is, does not imply that what it is, is not bad. Merely that it is less bad than the counterfactual situation—that is, less bad than my expectations.

counterargument: ebert was embarrassed by his early career foray into sexploitation filmmaking. his script for beyond the valley of the dolls includes multiple rapes, murderous queers, and a sleeping woman being forced to fellate a gun before her brains are blown out.
when you actually list it out it becomes really clear that most of the time Ebert was "wrong" about a great movie it's because he was really sensitive about the depiction of rape, which I can't really get huffy over.

sister jeanne laughs in madeline’s face when the girl says the nuns are there bc they love god, correcting her that they’re there because they’re women who are unwanted by society. its painful to watch people try to wokescold a movie that already knows and addresses your point!

ALSO disabled women at that time were sent to become nuns so it’s possible her being there in the first place was involuntary! i have more thoughts but i def have to watch it again to get my head straight

this is a very shallow, very reactionary interpretation of the devils and embarrasses me as someone who likes ethel cain. was i wrong to assume she had something going on upstairs? im surprised how unwilling she is to engage with the movie/how deeply she misunderstands it

dude, her humanity was never in question and you’re the one who brought it up while trying to temper your own seeming belief that she’s a genius 😭 look, i’m sorry i expressed mild disappointment in ethel cain’s shallow film analysis but i think we’re all going to live.

also, i already addressed why i think she may not have actually seen it. the thing she claims movie is about is not what the movie is about. maybe she played on her phone the whole time idk? either way, my opinion of her as an interpreter of the arts has been lowered! thats all!

ethel cain’s complaint about the devils is ironic to me bc *my* biggest complaint about the devils is that there isn’t enough focus on the nuns! no offense to oliver reed, but i am MUCH more interested in vanessa redgrave’s sister jeanne than i am in father grandier.

Finally the queen has arrived. “A spirit wholly opposed to the seriousness with which one ought to take the things of god, and that fostered in her a certain glee which destroys the compunction of heart indispensable to a perfect conversion to god” how can we not stan?!?!

finding out from the replies she’s saying this while also being an obsession super fan. oh boy. i really did get hoodwinked by the southern gothic pinterest aesthetic into thinking she was a intelligent, transgressive artist 😔 that’s on me and my biases. i’ll own that.

i’m sorry i can’t get over this when it’s literally clear from the film itself that the nuns are “hysterical” is because they’re put into a mass grave and told that if they don’t aid grandier’s political persecution by behaving as if they’ve been possessed, they’ll be executed.

we've already got tim burton and mike flannegan. we dont need another horror-adjacent director who does nothing but remakes and adaptations

i cannot begin to tell you how bizarre it is to watch gender swapped drarry become a rightwing shibboleth, particularly as a former drarry shipper. these grown men are moving in ways 16 year old me could not have even imagined at my most deranged/horniest.

Draco was practically written as a tsundere already. The rejected handshake, the wounded pride, the obsessive rivalry, the constant fixation on Harry. Make Draco a girl, and an entire enemies-to-lovers romance emerges from scenes Rowling had already almost written.

“keep their history alive” and she’s literally talking about ireland and italy, two existent countries with millions of people in them
only americans get to be told we have no culture and then when we go and try to find our ancestors and learn about their culture and try to keep their history alive we’re larping now we can’t do that

last time i went out on st patrick’s day i watched a girl wearing a kiss me im irish shirt order a round of “irish car bombs” so you’ll have to forgive me for being dubious about claims that your average southie has some sorr of metaphysical connection to irish ancestral trauma
irish people who think irish americans aren’t real irish are telling on themselves. you’re quite literally saying people displaced my genocide and occupation don’t have any connection to their lineage. you believe Palestinians born outside of Palestine aren’t palestinian.

using the ongoing palestinian genocide to talk about suffering you yourself did not experience but want sympathy for surviving is a very american impulse so yay assimilation
