But this does come with tradeoffs. Assumption of partial synchrony and high messaging overhead means the total system node count can't scale as high as asynchronous networks like Bitcoin. Fault tolerance threshold is 33%.

Blockmania is a Byzantine Consensus variant (not Longest-Chain) using PoS for sybil resistance & fee distribution so the formal barriers outlined in that paper don't apply.

Rise of leaderless BFT consensus: Blockmania. Blockmania is a terminating reliable broadcast protocol leveraged by @chainspace_io, comparable to Byzantine Agreement in @Algorand. Relative to PBFT, Blockmania reduces communication overhead without sacrificing liveness or safety.

@heidiann360 Have you seen our latest work on Blockmania. Nodes co-create a DAG and it is subsequently interpreted as byzantine consensus. We posit that this may also be used for crash-fail consensus (paxos & co). Any ideas?arxiv.org/abs/1809.01620

Sharding smart contract execution doesn't help if you can't also scale verification of what each shard does, or detect when a whole shard goes rogue. Nice work on the draft publication! Time to dig into this one.
