one reason a lot of tech cos struggle to find "storytellers" because their work is not very impactful. a lot of the best storytellers I've met are really motivated to understand and impact the world, so they end up in journalism, writing of some kind, policy, nonprofits etc. they just don't find most tech startups that interesting or of much world consequence. obviously there are some amazing companies going after huge problems. but i think a lot of b2b saas / vertical ai companies are going to struggle to recruit creative storytellers by nature of the problems they're tackling. a big reason I was motivated to go work on this at Cognition is that I think "software abundance" is an actually inspiring mission. but i turned down a ton of startup offers through my 20s because i found their missions uninspiring. more of a money grab vs a real missionary desire to make the world better.

They are a healthy company. Raised 8 figures, good volume and revenue, been around for a while, not Nigerian owned, and a team spread around the world. Iโ€™m looking for somebody senior, has flair, people facing and a grinder. If thatโ€™s you, hit me up in the DM.

One of the offers I got. If $8k - $10k (they can go as high as $12 - 15k) isnโ€™t small for you, hit me up. - Stablecoin company (B2B) - African Lead (Senior role) - Growth / Marketing
At least five top founders have told me some version of the same thing: โ€œI didnโ€™t know you were available. I wouldโ€™ve reached out.โ€ Hereโ€™s the thing about top talent. They are rarely available, and they get offers all the time. If thereโ€™s someone you really want on your team, reach out and make them an offer. Let them decide. The culture, the compensation or the chance to do work theyโ€™re genuinely excited about might be enough to make them think, โ€œMaybe itโ€™s time for a move.โ€ For me, Nuvion was a chance to work with a team Iโ€™d long admired. It was the easiest yes Iโ€™ve ever given. I said yes before I even heard the details of the offer.

what a shame it would be to spend your life dreaming about what you could become and then retreat the moment the pursuit begins asking something serious of you. you wanted to find out what was possible. well, here you are. donโ€™t flinch now.

Life itself is a series of disappointments leading to a final catastrophe in which it all ends. Now are there victories along the way? Of course. But the end state of everything is decay. There is no alternative universe where you are magically happy because you did X or Y.
there's a fundamental error in this reasoning. you're 37, you're lonely, and you've concluded that marrying someone earlier would have been the better decision. but you're comparing your actual circumstances to an imaginary marriage in which everything worked out. you have no idea what the alternative would have looked like. you could just as easily be 40, divorced, financially devastated, and wishing you'd never gotten married in the first place. marriage does not solve the problem of loneliness. it's an enormous commitment with its own costs and risks. your dissatisfaction with the result of your choice is not proof that the other choice would have been better.
