Building @tokencompassai - burning tokens and probably thinking about game theory.

How in the vibe code does this even happen? How many api credits can offset a weekend of getting gaslit by the usage meter?
There were reports of usage draining faster than anticipated for some users over the weekend. We've identified approximately 40,000 accounts that had an inconsistency on which usage limits where the actual usage that was applied did not correspond to their actual selected plan. We are reaching out individually to all these users and have corrected the issue. If this affected you, we'll add credits to your account. Sorry we got this wrong.

wtf. This is like KFC saying that 7% of their total sales is actually just competitors buying it to steal Colonel Sander’s prized and secret 11 herb spice recipe! Thats a family secret! Concerning.
Sources: Anthropic told investors that distillation accounts for 5% to 7% of revenue; its rapid but slowing revenue growth could weigh on its IPO valuation (@coryweinberg / The Information) (Visit Techmeme dot com for the link and full context!)

I’m sorry, but the “we used our models to understand the device and ..” hilariously added zero to this otherwise wild story. I recently watched some kid use his phone to ask ChatGPT “what time is it?” Same vibe.
We discovered a sophisticated recording device that was hidden inside one of our offices. We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier. We referred the matter to the FBI, and we’re grateful to the agents and prosecutors who moved quickly to make an arrest. The FBI’s investigation is ongoing and we will continue to support their work. At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data. The employee was terminated. We take protecting our technology, data, and people seriously, and as a matter of national importance. Our security program is designed to protect against a wide range of threat actors, from insider risks to cybercriminals to nation states, and this case is an example of how AI can help address these sophisticated security threats.

There’s a growing dissonance between the narrative of these frontier labs with literally thousands of engineers all orchestrating thousands of agents in a loop / graph with unlimited tokens and the reality of what net new novel and useful capabilities are actually being shipped

I have this rather cynical theory that all the consumer (and even enterprise) product dev is all just market kabuki to buy time until RSI and/or AGI whose implications and enterprise EV transcend any distracting multi billion dollar ARR milestone

Me talking to Claude as I recenter that div for the 4th time (Also, great movie and scene)
From Amadeus best clip ever One aspect of the film that is often overlooked is that Salieri is also a master musician. He is one of the few people who immediately recognizes and fully appreciates Mozart’s genius. In this scene, Salieri accurately transcribes every note based on Mozart’s highly condensed instructions. From a technical standpoint, this is an extremely demanding task, requiring extensive musical knowledge, a deep understanding of musical structure, and advanced score-reading and notation skills.

Though this scene is also a favorite and absolute banger. Also me talking to Claude and scowling when it makes a mistake.

@charlierguo @romainhuet Noticed that chatgpt.com/public/admin/api… only works when logged out / incognito otherwise infinitely redirects me back to chatgpt.com confusing experience. I'm on a Enterprise account/login. just fyi.

note: chatgpt.com/admin/api-refere… does seem to work? so its just a bunch of links that need to be updated or 301'd

This is very interesting and I’m thinking about the motivations here. Generously: offering better access/exposure to the Platform universe to subscription users. (This is free inference) Pessimistically: nothing is free, gradually introduces people to inevitable metered billing

We’re rolling out monthly Claude Platform API credits for Max and Team plans: Max 5x: $100 Max 20x: $200 Team: up to $500, pooled Works on any model, including Haiku 5.5, in your code or third-party harnesses. How it works and full terms: support.claude.com/en/articl…

its strange because these are by design completely different universes (claude vs platform) for very different audiences / use cases. plugging a platform api key into a 1st/3rd party harness has been kind of antithetical to the whole purpose of a subscription.

this, in conjunction with OpenAIs recent API tier compression (5 -> 3 usage tiers) announcement creates this weird layering of discounts, credits, deferred payments. It's really hard for consumers to actually understand what baseline unit costs are.

“Of course that's your contention. You just read a Medium post called "Transformers Explained Simply," so you'll believe that until next week, when you get to Karpathy's Zero to Hero. Then it's chapter 12 of Prince's Understanding Deep Learning… You got a private demo with a Batman-voice phone call when you could've read the same thing on arXiv for free.”
Ben Affleck reveals he writes Python, understands convolutional neural networks, worked extensively with GPUs, and used his celebrity status to get private looks at Google and OpenAI’s video models “I’ve always been kind of into computers since I was young. Then, when film started to move from analog film to digital, I became more interested in that aspect of it. The visual-effects workflow for many years has included machine learning, so I can write pretty shitty Python scripts and stuff like that. “With convolutional neural networks, which were the precursors to what the transformer can do, which is much more computation simultaneously, you would do things like look at what’s called a tensor. That’s the numerical translation of a visual image in numbers, like the batch number, the frame number and the red, green and blue values of each pixel in each frame. It’s just that simple. That numeric is called a tensor. “You’d use a convolutional neural network to identify patterns that reveal what’s called edge detection or feature extraction, which is identifying patterns well enough to know, this is where the window ledge is, so we can more easily take the green-screen image out and replace it with something. “That was familiar to me early on because, prior to Artists Equity, I had a small visual-effects company. I’ve worked with GPUs a lot too. The visual-effects guys said, ‘Hey, you should see. There are a couple: Google and this other company, OpenAI, are doing really interesting stuff with transformers in video.’ “I’ve learned that I can actually just call up and go, ‘Hey, it’s Ben Affleck. Can I come see what you’re doing?’ Sometimes people say yes, to my astonishment.”
