"no one forces anyone to be on SSRIs" only works if you have a very narrow definition of force as in only requiring pointing a weapon at someone and telling them they must take an SSRI or shoving the pill down one's throat.
The problem is that this leaves out the many people who were made to take an SSRI despite either being unaware of the real effects or actively disliking the drugs but still begrudgingly taking them. We live in an era in which coercion counts as force, as shown in the Cornell Seven case, but only physical force counts when regarding medications.
In real life, SSRIs are mass prescribed to children, adolescents, prisoners, elderly people and other vulnerable populations. Patients are coerced into taking them when they are told they have a chemical imbalance and this is like insulin for their diabetes, rather than a refined alcohol. Often families are perpetrators of this when they tell young members, such as kids and young adults, that they either take the medications or leave the house.
If you are here to advocate for all patients of mental health treatments, advocate for them all. Don't only advocate for people who claim medication saves their lives or who are victims of the type of medication you hate.

I think people are not aware of how much mis-information is propagated about this class of medications.
I remember being taught to say this to patients: that the increase in suicidality is caused by an increase in energy before an improvement in mood.
What studies show is simply an increase in suicidality when people are given these medications compared to placebo.
How many people have been talked into taking these medications because of the repetition of these talking points by prescribers?
Who Are the Real Purveyors of Medical Misinformation?
One of the most troubling things about psychiatry is how speculative explanations for drug harms become established facts through sheer repetition.
Take the claim that SSRIs can increase suicidality because they restore a depressed person’s energy before improving their mood, supposedly giving them the motivation to act on existing suicidal thoughts.
This is routinely presented as though it’s an established scientific explanation.
It isn’t. It’s a longstanding hypothesis for which convincing empirical evidence is lacking.
A 2009 review in Psychiatric Services examined this very theory and found no consistent evidence supporting it.
Yet rather than acknowledging that these drugs can themselves produce adverse psychological reactions, including agitation and akathisia, we’re offered a reassuring story about patients getting better.
It’s a striking example of how a superficially plausible sounding hypothesis can become received wisdom when it conveniently distracts from uncomfortable truths about drug harm.
Just because something is repeated as fact by someone in a white coat doesn’t make it any more true than any other forms of misinformation we hear online.
And when we see it we should call it out.

What this post doesn’t consider is that SSRIs can cause manic symptoms as an adverse reaction in people who are not bipolar at all.
Indeed, the claim that SSRI associated mania is simply the unmasking of a pre-existing bipolar disorder is a tendentious and speculative assumption lacking in serious scientific evidence.

100 billion neurons and 500 trillion synapses, yet psychiatry thinks they understand this system enough to tamper with by throwing understudied drugs at arguably the worlds most complex black box.

A new critical essay identifies how psychiatric institutions overlook treatment-related harms, and repeat patterns of abuse and neglect—and calls for independent oversight, meaningful patient involvement, and accountability.

It’s about the quality of the warning too, it needs to be sincere. We’re talking about losing a bodily function, potentially for life, with no understanding of how to get it back.
There should be a written consent form encompassing:
- PSSD
- PAWS
- Suicidality ⬆️
- Akathisia
How can global updates be this far apart?
In the UK, the MHRA has just strengthened warnings on SSRIs for suicidal thoughts/behaviors and persistent sexual dysfunction (PSSD). Risks that "are not new," they say — after years of patient pressure.
Meanwhile in Australia, the PBAC (Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee) is pushing to lift prescribing restrictions and expand PBS subsidies so more antidepressants can be handed out for a wider range of uses. Wider net. More access. Same drugs.
One country slowly admits the risks and tightens the messaging. Another widens the net and makes them cheaper and easier to prescribe.
UK MHRA: "Hey, maybe we should finally warn people properly that SSRIs can cause suicidal thoughts and lasting sexual dysfunction. Risks aren’t new, apparently."
Australia’s PBAC: "Cool story. Let’s make them cheaper and easier to prescribe for more things."

Remember, folks: warning the public about real harms from medications is NOT fearmongering.
What IS fearmongering is shaming people for speaking out about those harms by claiming that people might die if they're frightened into not taking their medication.

They only care about raising awareness and saving future victims. Nobody seems to care about those of us already enduring the hell of PSSD.

I suspect I might have PSSD, but I thought for most of my life it was either Lyme infection as a child or low dopamine production from being concieved by two heroin addicts.
Either way, at age 41 I have hardly ever pursued love with any effort. I was prescribed SSRIs a few times
Where is the national outrage for stories like this?
SSRIs kill. They destroy health, lives, and families. Nobody is being warned of the risks.
Post SSRI Sexual Dysfunction (PSSD) is a condition that must be acknowledged. There must be justice for this young girl who lost her life. There must be research done for those holding on to hope. All of these people are suffering in silence with this condition and are in survival mode every day.
I hope the psychiatrists on this platform that have mocked and abused patients harmed by antidepressants will now apologise to them. No? Thought not.
🚨 BREAKING: The UK MHRA will add the term "Post SSRI Sexual Dysfunction (PSSD)" to the leaflets of 10 antidepressants. Doctors must now warn patients that sexual dysfunction may continue after stopping treatment. 🧵

Surreal to see the NIH Director @NIHDirector_Jay talking about PSSD—an injury long dismissed, with victims told by doctors their antidepressant induced harm wasn’t real.
For years it was relegated to Reddit forums and hidden corners of the internet: an abandoned community of devastated lives desperately seeking answers, with no one listening.
These are real people unjustly left to suffer, stripped of fundamental parts of their humanity. We cannot leave them behind. We urgently need research into the underlying mechanisms and a path toward recovery. #pssd @PSSDNetwork @elliotbewick @lololizzle

As long as I have breath in my lungs I’ll talk about PSSD. It’s such a horrifying condition for those who experience it.

What ‘pseudoaddiction’ was to opioids, ‘discontinuation syndrome’ is to SSRIs.
Both are Pharma backed terms with questionable scientific foundations, used to downplay drug harms and protect commercial interests.
Both are clearly euphemisms which protect profits over patients.
Fucking unbelievable. For some historical context, pharma led a campaign nearly 30 years ago to frame antidepressant withdrawal as "discontinuation" rather than withdrawal to characterize it as more benign and self-limited. "Withdrawal" has since become the accepted terminology. Goldberg and several coauthors used “antidepressant withdrawal” in their own consensus statement earlier this year, yet here they are, retreating to old propaganda techniques.

Takes a drug with a black box warning.
Experiences the very reaction the black box warns about.
The reaction gets labeled as a new psychiatric disorder.
Gets prescribed more drugs.
The drugs are never questioned.

In our all-women PSSD group, there’s this beautiful young woman who looks like Barbara Palvin and is as intelligent as Oprah Winfrey & Michelle Obama, but she has lost her sexuality and personality bcz of PSSD. I feel sorry for all of us young, intelligent men & women with pssd.

Let’s see if @FDA follows suit on warning about PSSD.
History has a way of repeating itself.
Back in 2003, the UK led the way in warning about antidepressants and the risk of suicidal behavior.
The FDA didn’t require antidepressant black-box suicide warnings until 2004.
Twenty-three years later, are we watching history repeat itself?

I wonder how the ‘doctors’ who deny that this is an issue are feeling now.
They won’t apologise.
They won’t admit they are wrong.
They will downplay the risks as rare or temporary.
They’ll see it as an opportunity to exploit the injured with more drugs.
They’ll use it as an opportunity to create new diagnoses.

Good to see the MHRA are going to make information about persistent sexual dysfunction and suicidal ideation induced by antidepressants more prominent. I hope it will be more than a line or two in the small print of the drug package inserts which no one reads anyway.

It’s disturbing how long overdue this conversation is. We’ve barely scratched the surface.
• Stop calling these drugs “medicine”
• Post-SSRI Sexual Dysfunction (PSSD) can go far beyond sexual dysfunction. It can be emotional castration too. The name doesn’t begin to capture the severity of it.
