It feels at times as if the enlightenment age never happened. In many ways, our response to #COVID19 seems to me not that different from our ancestors' reaction to the Black Death, with its toxic mix of superstition, millenarianism, dogma, fear, anger and ostracism.

Four in five covid patients in intensive care are overweight or obese. The severely obese are represented at approximately 4x their population rate (10.9% v 2.8%).

I spent a good part of my career engineering emulsion PCR and Nebulization equipment for DNA and RNA shearing. I have a very different view on this topic and have mostly stayed out of the debate as it's now cultish.

COVID-19 plus influenza/pneumonia deaths are at 1,621 this week, while five-year average flu/pneumonia is 1,600. C-19 is more infectious than influenza and is harvesting the susceptible population who would succumb respiratory infections. No excess deaths at present.

Controversial opinion: those that say its not possible to shield the vulnerable, also won't be able to prove if there is a difference (or lack of it) between the trajectory of the virus at Madrid and Stockholm. Who do you think has let it rip?

Universities are seeing many coranavirus outbreaks. Here is a plot of weekly cases per 100k pop. over the year. Comparing neighbourhoods (technically MSOAs) that have students making up at least 25% of the population with the rest. (Note: Most recent week data is incomplete)

Acknowledging that would mean doing away with the narrative that it is our actions, not seasonality, which led to a decrease in cases in May. When cases increase, it will be because people will have lost their endurance and persistence.

A times, there's something touching about our attitude to #COVID19, like a child on a beach, cursing the incoming waves, and taking pride whenever one recedes towards the sea ...

One feature of the #COVID19 pandemic which might delay the return to normality is that those with most influence in society tend to be the least negatively affected by public health containment measures.

These are the researchers who often get lost in the noise of Twitter. Their important work at times runs counter to the accepted Covid-19 dogma and thus does not get amplified.
Read their work, share it with others, and seek out more.

I thought hard about how best to raise this issue that others have mentioned before me (e.g. @federicolois). There is an important discussion to be had how to minimise deaths under the most likely scenario that #COVID190 cannot be suppressed at this stage.

I respectfully disagree (not with the article which I'm not planning to read) but with your statement that we must embrace a 'new normal'. Such dystopian depictions of the future aren't helpful to get to the other end of the pandemic with society largely unscathed.
