Exactly! #DevOps was just a logical continuation. The ideas of the theory of constraints, value flow, and systems thinking were forming for a few decades before that.

I suggest that they are NOT the bottleneck. The person isn't the problem, or else removing the person would instantly remove the problem. Clearly, that's not the case. So: * the person is AT the bottleneck * the bottleneck is the problem.

My friend @nicolas_frankel got suspended because he wrote tweets against Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He was reported by Russian trolls and was suspended. He has a new handle @AJavaGeek which I hope you will follow. Any help restoring his account would be appreciated πŸ™

Documentation is a product. If you don't have the capacity to maintain it, then do not write it. Code and maybe a couple of high-level diagrams describing the big picture are enough.

The problem is that a lot of documentation is written as a replacement for an absent expert. The need that fills is better met by San available, present expert. Working alone means all experts are absent. This creates an (artificial) need for comprehensive docs.

Replying to @GergelyOrosz
Yeah, "waterfall" is basically an emotional swear word now. Strategic planning is required for any org. The question is how big is the degree of adhering to/changing that strategy. Agile is more about tactics.

The irony of the software industry is that we select terms that eventually do not mean what they were supposed to mean or otherwise are very "cloudy". πŸ‘‡πŸ§΅

At JPM, everything just felt complacent. People were okay having meetings on meetings for meetings. I had to ask permission to install tools to make me/the team more productive: and most were rejected. Having good relationship with traders was more important than shipping stuff.

What many sw engineers don't realize: The majority of jobs do not hire you to write the highest quality code or produce the cleanest architecture. They hire you to solve their business problems very efficiently. Sometimes this means high-quality code. Sometimes not at all.

People have kids, mortgages, student loans, and on top of that most of these companies see not getting promoted as a failing. There is no prize for doing the right thing when everyone tells you otherwise, trust me, I checked.
