When does noise start looking like a meaningful change—and can a good night’s sleep help us tell the difference? Very happy to see @sleepy_neuron Master’s work now out in @iScience! This has opened up a number of interesting questions for her PhD. 🧠💤 @BSBEIITK1 @mfcem_iitk
Very excited to share my first paper, also my first first-author paper, from my Master’s thesis, now published in @iScience_CP!🧠✨ @cognoman5 & I show that high trait anxiety can make noise look like actual change, but sleeping on it might just help! 💤 cell.com/iscience/fulltext/S…

Preprint alert: Anxiety and depression may not simply make one more loss averse, risk averse or cautious. Instead, they appear to weaken the translation of value into decision—a subtle process-level deficit that is largely invisible in conventional behavioural measures. @mrugsen
1/2 New preprint: How do anxiety and depression alter decision-making? Across behavioural and EEG samples, we combined hierarchical drift diffusion modelling with centroparietal positivity (CPP) to test where symptoms act in the decision process. #ComputationalPsychiatry

Cool new results from our sleep studies! Anxiety makes it harder to learn from rewards when things are uncertain — but deep sleep helps mitigate this! Excellent work as part of her Master's thesis! @sleepy_neuron

Interesting new findings from the lab on how environmental structure can shape Pavlovian bias in anxious individuals! Great work as part of his PhD thesis! @Priyans58937885
Excited to share our preprint where @cognoman5 and I examine how environmental structure shapes balance between reflexive and goal-directed systems. This thread walks through the key findings 🧵

The Mehta Family Center for Engineering in Medicine recently hosted the ‘Innovations in NeuroTech’ workshop, bringing together experts from clinical neuroscience, computational neuroscience, and neuroengineering. Organized by Prof. Arjun Ramakrishnan, the workshop was supported by a seed grant from IIT Kanpur and Rice University, along with contributions from the Jay Pullur Neuroscience Initiative and the Neuroscience Centre of Excellence. The workshop featured two thematic sessions. The first, Innovations in Brain Monitoring, Implants, and Epilepsy Care, included presentations from experts like Dr. Harilal from AIMS, Kochi; Dr. Nilesh Kurwale from DMH, Pune; Prof. John Seymour from Rice University; Mr. Maroun Farah, CEO of Sensomedical; and Prof. Nitin Tandon. The second session, Advances in Neuromodulation, explored innovative neuromodulation techniques. Prof. Behnaam Aazhang from Rice University; Prof. Pragathi Priyadarshini and Prof. Nikunj Bhagat from IITK; and Prof. Venkatasubramanian Ganesan elaborated on different aspects of the field. The workshop concluded with a roundtable discussion led by Mr. Kaustubh Despande, CEO of Eywa Neuro and Prof. Venkatasubramanian Ganesan. With over 100 attendees, including PhD students, and 12 poster presentations on neural recording and stimulation across species—from flies to rodents to humans—the workshop laid a robust foundation for future research and collaboration. #medicalscience #Neurotech #neuroengineering #workshop #IITKanpur #iitk

Some of the key questions are: What is the future direction for neural implants, neuromodulation, and closed-loop brain-machine interfaces? Additionally, how can we foster scalable and sustainable neurotechnology development in low-resource settings? #IITKanpur #BSBEIITK1

So glad to see attention to fitness cliffs here! Lovely recent work by Mitteroecker provides solid modeling of how it could help to explain schizophrenia. Another example of intrinsically vulnerable systems. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
Everything in Moderation? In the wild, rash rabbits get eaten, cowardly go hungry. Often the optimal degree of a trait is somewhere in the middle. This begs a fascinating question - why differences at all? 'Cliff edge' selection may provide one explanation.
