The message of the UK National Srebrenica Memorial Ceremony was clear: remembrance must be grounded in truth, justice, and responsibility.
His Excellency President Denis Bećirović, Chair of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, paid tribute to the Mothers of Srebrenica, whose dignity and determination have kept alive the names of those who were murdered and sustained the long struggle for truth.
“They did not allow the victims of the genocide to be forgotten.
They did not allow justice to remain silent.”
He reminded us that preserving the truth about Srebrenica is not only an obligation to the victims and survivors. It is part of preserving “the moral foundations of Europe.” His warning was equally direct: the ideologies that produced genocide do not disappear simply because time has passed. Genocide denial, the glorification of convicted war criminals, and efforts to destabilise Bosnia and Herzegovina must never be treated with complacency.

Together they honoured those who were murdered, stood with survivors and reminded us why remembrance matters.
Over the coming days, we'll be sharing more from the ceremony, including the powerful performances and the voices that shaped this year's National Srebrenica Memorial Ceremony.
