A highlight from my trip to London was meeting Angelita is person. She's built an amazing "AI virtuous cycle" where AI serves insights to people who validate and improve it. More business users are getting trusted self-service answers than with any traditional BI tool!

The purpose of estimating software projects is not business planning its to create a self imposed deadline that creates social pressure for teams to finish the project. This sounds insane. When I was an engineer I hated estimation and deadlines. My feeling was, it will be done when it’s done and we don’t know when it will be done. I would obnoxiously give a probability distribution whenever asked if we would ship on time. But in reality, in a complex project with many people or teams, people need a good deadline, one that is aggressive but not insane. This is what lets everyone involved solve for what really matters, cut things that don’t matter, and push to complete something really hard. It’s a silly social convention, but it really helps. In fact setting aggressive but not insane deadlines, slipping them when needed but holding them when possible, is one of the key capabilities in engineering management.
There’s a kind of polite fiction at the heart of the software industry.

Critical governance knowledge lived in individual "data historians," the people who knew where reports originated and why certain transformations existed. When those people left, transferred, or retired, they took that knowledge with them. "If context is your moat, it should be open source." Suresh Srinivas (@suresh_m_s), Collate CEO, @BigData_LDN: proprietary context layers trap your AI advantage inside one vendor. Open context compounds. 7x fewer wrong answers. 75% fewer tokens. 4,000+ orgs including OpenAI, Yelp, Airbus. buff.ly/KEkm0gh #AIforData #ContextLayer #AIAgents #OpenMetadata

A user survey at @RakutenGroup found that it took two to three months to determine whether a dataset was useful for a given problem. OpenMetadata is changing that for @RakutenGroup. Read about it here: buff.ly/g91MrpO #OpenMetadata #DataDiscovery #DataGovernance #DataEngineering

What happens when your AI agents understand the data, but not what it actually means? For one company, even "order" meant different things across teams - and that ambiguity was enough to make reliable AI reasoning a challenge. See how they approached building the shared context their agents needed to reason consistently across the business. I am begging someone to read this shit. The industry is completely ruined; GitHub crashes every day because of morons like this pushing three hundred thousand lines of, and I quote: "Rust implementation of the Lean 4 toolchain with -olean, C ABI, LSP, and CLI compatibility; deterministic parallelism; declaration-level incrementality; and a dual-engine kernel capped at 12 KLOC." I'm in no way anti-artificial-intelligence; in fact I would consider myself somewhat radically in favor of it, but what I am anti- is empowering demented fools to vomit infinite dreck into the commons. Enjoy garbage world, I guess.
I've been pretty busy the last couple of weeks. This is just the top projects in terms of commits and changes. So far in October I've made 21k commits across 123 repos. And I was sick in bed with Covid for 5 of those days (the lowest I hit was 327 commits in a day, all on fumes!)

Four ways to test a context layer before you trust it: 1. Does it make commitments? 2. Can you inspect the logic? 3. Does inference trace to a rule? 4. Who owns the output? @JessicaTalisman + @d3fmacro, Oct 14, 8am PT. buff.ly/zfxHhUh #Ontology #AIAgents #OpenMetadata
