1/ Delighted to share that my paper with Marco Francesconi (@UoE_Economics) has been published in the Journal of Human Resources! 🎉 Here's a thread on what we found about Italy's 2012 Fornero Reform and the rising cost of job loss. 🧵
Weaker #employment protections equal higher costs of job loss. Marco Francesconi & @d_sonedda found that Italy's 2012 Fornero reform #policy lowered rehired workers' earnings by 15% after the first year & 4% after three, along with other burdens. doi.org/10.3368/jhr.0725-144…

6/ This wasn't only about dismissed workers, the effect showed up across all types of separation. Our reading: firms started expecting lower average productivity in the rehiring market once dismissals got easier, hurting everyone re-entering the market.

7/ And the costs weren't evenly spread: young workers and those in Southern Italy were hit hardest. Easing employment protection alone didn't reduce dualism, it deepened existing inequalities.

Pleased that "Does Weaker Employment Protection Lower the Cost of Job Loss?" (with Marco Francesconi, @UoE_Economics) is accepted at the Journal of Human Resources. Short answer: no; costs rose hardest for the group meant to be helped: young workers.

In 2012, Italy reformed employment protection laws to reduce temporary jobs in favour of permanent ones. But what did this mean for the cost of job loss? Our column for  VoxEU here....

This paper explores how reducing employment protection legislation raised the cost of job loss and deepened the disparities faced by vulnerable workers
