How much does inheritance law shape who ultimately receives our wealth? In much of the world, people are not entirely free to decide who inherits their estate. In many civil-law countries, minimum shares are reserved for children, spouses and, in some cases, parents. Switzerland loosened these rules in 2023, reducing the compulsory share for children by one third and removing it altogether for surviving parents. In another episode of #VoxTalks Economics, @Marius_Brulhart (@HECLausanneEcon) joins Tim Phillips to discuss what these changes can tell us about inheritance, the diffusion of wealth, and the trade-offs between giving people greater freedom over their estates and using inheritance taxation to redistribute wealth. With his co-author, they analysed almost 17,000 anonymous wills written before and after the reform to see how people responded to this greater freedom. 馃帶Listen to the episode now: ow.ly/enns50ZPBrQ #VoxTalks #Economics #Inheritance #WealthInequality

Does joint custody lead to better outcomes for parents and children after divorce? In the latest episode of #VoxTalks Economics, Tim Phillips sits down with Gordon Dahl (@UCSDEcon) and @CostasMeghir (@YaleEconomics) to discuss new research examining how custody arrangements affect families. Compiling an impressive database of over 56,000 Swedish custody rulings, scanning paper archives by hand, the authors linked the varying results to records of parents' earnings, mental health prescriptions and children's school performance. Using this data, they discussed the effects of joint versus sole custody, the substantial variations in how often Swedish Judges award joint custody and the consequences of these decisions. 馃帶 Listen to the episode: ow.ly/joLF50ZYviy 馃摉 Read the paper: ow.ly/aaCE50ZYvwv #VoxTalks #Econ #FamilyEconomics
