Submitting student work to tools that will tell you whether it was written by an AI or not is merely adding to the library of future AI tools. Additionally it’s distributing their intellectual property to companies that will profit from it without permission or compensation.

If @NYTimesGuild members don't have a deal soon, we’re asking readers to not engage in any @nytimes platforms tomorrow and stand with us on the digital picket line! Read local news. Listen to public radio. Pull out a cookbook. Break your Wordle streak.

I feel like this is a great time for a thread on motivation and how a controlling environment might get people to do what you want short term, but damages internal motivation and quality of work. But, since this app is probably going away soon so I’ll leave it at that.

Karcher, @dan_guberman, Bonem, and Lumkes explore the role that motivation, experience, perceptions of competence and professional autonomy play in instructor perceptions of active learning. Read more at:journalhosting.ucalgary.ca/i… @ISSOTL
To streamline the #POD22 group creation process, I've created a Google form: forms.gle/o2ZQy2EHzhK2eJe8A Please fill out this form to signal interest in a Disabled Affinity Group and/or an Accessibility in Education SIG. If you have questions or suggestions, please DM or email me.
If you are at #POD22 and you want to join a disability affinity group or accessibility SIG, reach out to me! We are doing this, it is happening. (I'm not actually sure how to do this, but if we get enough of us together, it will spontaneously assemble itself, I think.)

Now I have a study I want to do but the logistics in my mind are probably not feasible
Replying to @dan_guberman
I think that's a good way to put it: possibly more work, definitely more well-being.

So pretty much no more operas in the state. Seriously though this is horrifying especially living in a state that would eagerly copy this bill.
Terrifying. Tennessee just released SB3 - this bill, if passed, would make "male or female impersonators providing entertainment that appeals to a prurient interest"/drag in public a crime. This is so vague that it could be targeted at trans actors, comedians, story hours.
O wow!!!! this is so exciting and I’m so disappointed I can’t be there in person to express my appreciation for all of the amazing editors who have been super generous in giving me feedback to improve my reviews.
Congratulations dear @dan_guberman!! Distinguished Reviewer for TLI @ISSOTL #ISSOTL22

I remember the first time I was presenting at a Sotl conference and I realized people don’t read papers here. Spent the whole first night in my hotel room radically changing my presentation for next morning and practicing. Now I hope to never read a paper again.

I would really love to read some papers on defining the “real world” in higher education.

This would be terrible of the many places I have lived this location is the only BMV/DMV where I have consistently had a pleasant experience. And the population has been growing relatively fast so it’s probably another effort to suppress voting in a college town.
BMV aims to close West Lafayette license branch. WL Mayor John Dennis says (paraphrasing here): Wait, what? Public hearing in two weeks. open.substack.com/pub/daveba…
This is exciting, I’ve been talking about and sharing Kasser and Ryan’s 1993 Dark Side of the American Dream article ever since I read it a few years ago, as it continues to be even more relevant today in my mind (of course SDT is always relevant).
An enormous review—105 studies; over 70k people—found that valuing external validation and outcomes over internal rewards and satisfaction was associated with negative wellbeing. Seeking fame or money (above a certain threshold) makes you worse off. Here’s what makes you well:

It never ceases to astonish me how many people overlook the potential of regional public universities. These are valuable institutions that are often central to the communities they inhabit, with untapped potential. But bc of academia's elitism, etc etc you know the drill here
