Con Edison now wants battery projects to pay about $21M each in grid upgrades to connect. 25 projects canceled. 91 more at risk. 2.5 GW stuck in the queue.
Those batteries are supposed to help bring New York’s bills down. I asked NYSERDA chair Audrey Zibelman who fixes that.
Most Americans have never once thought about where their electricity comes from. That's changing fast this year, with bills going up and people asking why.
Confusing moment for consumers. Incredible opportunity for our industry to educate and bring in a whole new audience.

It's very very hot in Texas.
But the grid is fine.
Electricity prices are manageable.
What happened?

Why are AI companies so obsessed with gas?
Michael Thomas of Cleanview traces it back to xAI wheeling in mobile gas generators and getting a data center online in 4 months when it usually takes 18 to 24. Everyone else started planning their own gas plants.
90 gigawatts announced since the start of 2025, but only 2 gigawatts built.

The Department of Energy admitted in court it cancelled hundreds of grants "based solely on the political identity of the grant recipient's state," and NOT "based on any programmatic, statutory, cost-reduction, or performance-based factor."
This proves the White House lied.
BREAKING NYT:
Federal officials said in court documents that they halted billions of dollars in funding for energy projects to states "based solely" on whether they backed Trump in the 2024 election.

This amazing website, called "Worse on Purpose," is cataloguing all the ways companies are deliberately and secretively degrading their own products
As usual, in most cases the culprit is private equity extracting enormous sums while everyone else is left worse off.
Jigar Shah breaking down why EVOS is a different animal in Europe: not a bolt-on battery peak shaver, the battery does the actual work and the engine just recharges it at peak efficiency. Higher diesel costs and tighter emissions rules make it a natural fit.
Amit Narayan says we can double the grid's capacity — 300+ gigawatts — without inventing a single new technology or building a new plant. The grid's only running at 30% utilization. We're just not using what we already built.

36 states elect a governor this year. Every candidate gets the same question: why is my electric bill so high?
Jennifer Granholm has never lost an election. Two-term governor of Michigan. Former Secretary of Energy.
Her answer: data centers done right don't raise your bill. They lower it. The whole game is the guardrails.
Loudoun County got it wrong. A Louisiana town got it right, and a data center there just funded $50,000 teacher bonuses.

I have been waiting for this day for a long time! Watch while I try not to fangirl too hard over @SecGranholm. 🥰
This is also the best entry episode to @EnergyEmpirePod for anyone who doesn’t work in the energy industry.

AI can automate a lot, but not Bob the fire marshal.
Stakeholder trust, human judgment, and professional liability still require a person in the loop. That 5% matters more than people think.
Build back better isn't just a slogan... it's math.
Rep. Castor gets it: resilient infrastructure upfront costs less than disaster recovery. Local communities have the know-how. Give them the resources.

This has quietly been a miracle month in medicine.
In the last 5 weeks we’ve got news on:
- retatrutide, the triple agonist GLP-1 from Lilly, basically melting fat and body-wide inflammation at record levels
- RevMed’s new pancreatic cancer drug showing unprecedented abilities to extend life
- small trial of a one-and-done PCSK9 gene editing therapy for slashing LDL cholesterol
- Mayo’s AI-assisted radiology showing vastly improved cancer detection
- this new therapy for metastatic solid tumors
This stuff is at varying levels of evidence. Retatrutide is ~100% on its way, other stuff needs more clinical trial data. But put it together and we’re maybe on the verge of majorly reducing the mortality of heart disease and cancer, the two leading causes of death in America.
RNG is one of those sectors that just wins you over once you actually learn about it.
Win for the environment. Win for rural income. Win for energy security.
And yet… the politics are complicated. We're going to break it all down. 🎙️

BREAKING: About 120 U.S. military veterans were arrested inside the Cannon House Office Building today protesting Trump's war on Iran.
Some were on crutches. Some were in wheelchairs. Some carried the burial flags of fallen soldiers.
They are members of About Face — veterans who know what war costs because they have already paid for one.
Capitol Police handcuffed disabled veterans and dragged them out of the rotunda.
53% of American voters oppose the war. 74% oppose ground troops. 61% disapprove of Trump's handling of it.
The people who fought America's last wars are now being arrested for trying to stop the next one.
Never stop connecting the dots.
Clean energy companies: this is your moment.
Gas prices are up. Farmers can't afford fertilizer. Airlines are canceling flights. The case for clean energy has never been easier to make.

Clean energy needs a cultural moment as much as it needs a policy win.

@JigarShahDC teamed up with @nicomeo and SunCast to sit down with Tom Fanning live at the UNC Clean Tech Summit.
43 years at Southern Company. Finished Vogtle. Co-chaired the federal government's principal liaison on grid security for nearly a decade.
Not many people have finished a nuclear plant and protected the grid from cyberattacks. Tom Fanning has done both.
