Security called me at 6:12 AM today.
"Patch every PHP server immediately."
I asked what happened.
"Two critical vulnerabilities. Remote code execution. No authentication required."
Cool.
How many PHP servers do we have?
According to inventory: 12
According to reality:
Nobody knows.
We found one running WordPress.
Three running old internal tools.
One under someone's desk.
Two inside vendor appliances.
A forgotten employee directory from 2016.
And a server named:
PHP-OLD-DO-NOT-TOUCH
Naturally, that one runs payroll exports.
Then we found a PHP 5.6 box.
I asked who owned it.
The documentation said:
BRIAN.
Brian left in 2019.
We called Brian.
He said:
"Oh wow, that's still running?"
Excellent.
By 8 AM, leadership joined the incident call.
CEO:
"Can hackers actually get in?"
Security:
"Potentially yes."
CEO:
"Without a password?"
Security:
"Yes."
CEO:
"Then why do WE need passwords?"
Not the lesson.
Finance asked if we could wait until the weekend to patch because downtime affects revenue.
Security explained that the alternative was letting strangers execute code on our servers.
Finance asked for a cost comparison.
At 9:17, someone suggested temporarily taking the vulnerable websites offline.
Marketing refused.
"Our campaign is live."
So for the next hour, the company officially decided maintaining a landing page for 20% off webinar registration was more important than preventing remote server takeover.
We finally patched everything we could find.
Then our scanner discovered another PHP server.
Hostname:
TEMP-PHP-2014
Uptime:
4,512 days.
Nobody knows what it does.
Nobody owns it.
Nobody can shut it down.
But every time we block network access, the warehouse stops printing shipping labels.
Security has classified it as critical infrastructure.
It is running PHP 5.4.
The vulnerability has existed longer than half our employees.
The emergency patch took four hours.
Finding out what PHP actually runs took eleven.
The internet isn't held together with code.
It's held together with servers everyone is afraid to turn off.
Missouri politicians are sneaking Amendment 4 onto a low-turnout August ballot — it lets one district override what the rest of us voted for. Lawmakers who think they know better than the people who put them there. I did the homework:

This is how I watch the morning news using my #Powerwall during a power outage. @tesla
Seemingly, I can keep this up for over 24 hours. Something in my house is drawing 200W, but I can't imagine what that is. @Tesla Energy support chat opens at 8 am CST. The outage happened at 6:35 am. ☹️
So @SUSE announced a hard fork of @RedHat EL yesterday... and maybe I'm just super nerdy, but while RedHat obviously started this shakeup by changing their stance on access to their sources, SuSE jumping into the fray definitely changes things. suse.com/news/SUSE-Preserves…
Also, I'd like to propose a mascot for the new, unnamed distro (hat-tip to @DaHoff333 for the right AI incantation and final GIMP work)
I made it until Dec 17th with copious amounts of Christmas music listening.

Really excited for @dcode and Jessica David’s talk on “Cracking the Beacon: Automating the extraction of implant configurations” at the @sansforensics con. sans.org/cyber-security-trai…
Hey @linkedin! I'm tired of you selling my information so I can get cold called at 9am for a job title I had 5 years ago. My phone number was only listed as a security item, not contact info. This violates my personal privacy policy, so I'm scrubbing the info. Knock it off.

Here's a tool that was written by @dcode and @DanielStepanic that automates the collection of #cobaltstrike beacons from #Elastic, pulls the configuration out, and writes it all back into Elasticsearch. elastic.github.io/security-r…

Elastic's MacOS Endpoint Agent with the Malware Protections feature enabled and MacOS Prebuilt Detection Rules enabled in Kibana detected the new MacOS malware Dazzlespy (welivesecurity.com/2022/01/2…) out of the box. (These capabilities are free and open source for you to use.)

I'm interested in moving my money to a US-based bank with 2FA that doesn't suck. Namely I'm looking for TOTP. I'm looking at you @USAA @CapitalOne @Chase @WellsFargo @Citi @PNCBank credit unions and others. Any ideas?
I'm sorry, this is absurd @FoxBusiness. green energy caused this? In reality, all TX energy producers and ERCOT failed to retrofit freeze protections because it's expensive. I'm ordering more @tesla panels and powerwalls fxn.ws/2ZrX3NW #FoxBusiness

I know @Schwarzenegger was born in Austria, but he's a hell of an American. Above all, I think the political divisiveness, intolerance of each others ideas, and unwillingness to compromise at all is what destroys us. It's not too late to move on, together.
