Security called me at 6:12 AM today.
"Patch every PHP server immediately."
I asked what happened.
"Two critical vulnerabilities. Remote code execution. No authentication required."
Cool.
How many PHP servers do we have?
According to inventory: 12
According to reality:
Nobody knows.
We found one running WordPress.
Three running old internal tools.
One under someone's desk.
Two inside vendor appliances.
A forgotten employee directory from 2016.
And a server named:
PHP-OLD-DO-NOT-TOUCH
Naturally, that one runs payroll exports.
Then we found a PHP 5.6 box.
I asked who owned it.
The documentation said:
BRIAN.
Brian left in 2019.
We called Brian.
He said:
"Oh wow, that's still running?"
Excellent.
By 8 AM, leadership joined the incident call.
CEO:
"Can hackers actually get in?"
Security:
"Potentially yes."
CEO:
"Without a password?"
Security:
"Yes."
CEO:
"Then why do WE need passwords?"
Not the lesson.
Finance asked if we could wait until the weekend to patch because downtime affects revenue.
Security explained that the alternative was letting strangers execute code on our servers.
Finance asked for a cost comparison.
At 9:17, someone suggested temporarily taking the vulnerable websites offline.
Marketing refused.
"Our campaign is live."
So for the next hour, the company officially decided maintaining a landing page for 20% off webinar registration was more important than preventing remote server takeover.
We finally patched everything we could find.
Then our scanner discovered another PHP server.
Hostname:
TEMP-PHP-2014
Uptime:
4,512 days.
Nobody knows what it does.
Nobody owns it.
Nobody can shut it down.
But every time we block network access, the warehouse stops printing shipping labels.
Security has classified it as critical infrastructure.
It is running PHP 5.4.
The vulnerability has existed longer than half our employees.
The emergency patch took four hours.
Finding out what PHP actually runs took eleven.
The internet isn't held together with code.
It's held together with servers everyone is afraid to turn off.
Missouri politicians are sneaking Amendment 4 onto a low-turnout August ballot — it lets one district override what the rest of us voted for. Lawmakers who think they know better than the people who put them there. I did the homework:

Sorry, but it's too late to stop it. All of the thrunting hate just continues to spread the word .... so to speak....
Thrunt on my friends! Thrunt on!
The Founding Fathers envisioned farmers and other common folk seeking in Congress to represent their region before going back to their private life after sometime. They weren't expecting "the swamp" of corporate puppets that serve 40+ years with no real world experience.

@elonmusk are you still about this? Is #AmericaParty the way forward? It's probably an odd way to connect, but as a 24-year retired Army veteran and Google security engineer, I'm game to continue to serve as a Rep in MO. D & R are two sides of the same coin and it's too much.

@WasteManagement ... Bruh... Your password policy is atrocious. It took me a while to validate because I interpreted the instructions wrong. You require _EXACTLY_ 8 characters?!?! In 2025? Yeah, gonna use a temporary credit card on this one!
@PWTooStrong
Seemingly, I can keep this up for over 24 hours. Something in my house is drawing 200W, but I can't imagine what that is. @Tesla Energy support chat opens at 8 am CST. The outage happened at 6:35 am. ☹️
This is how I watch the morning news using my #Powerwall during a power outage. @tesla

Really cool, especially the dancing at the end. Reproduce the ending of the "Rock that Body" music video, and I'll be super impressed. #featureRequest youtu.be/nmnjL26OBcY?si=qV96…
Also, I'd like to propose a mascot for the new, unnamed distro (hat-tip to @DaHoff333 for the right AI incantation and final GIMP work)
So @SUSE announced a hard fork of @RedHat EL yesterday... and maybe I'm just super nerdy, but while RedHat obviously started this shakeup by changing their stance on access to their sources, SuSE jumping into the fray definitely changes things. suse.com/news/SUSE-Preserves…

@RepMTG I've only recently read your congressional webpage and your most recent tweets. Jesus teaches that we should love our neighbors as ourselves, even if we disagree with them. Your content shows that you're anti-trans and anti-Biden. What are you for?

I'm a conservative American that worked in the Intel community during @Snowden's leaks. Leaked intelligence like this is only for the glory of the leaker. It causes irreparable harm to national security. Leeching onto this like he's a hero shows that you're a just puppet4politics
