So basically, today PHP got two critical bugs that let anyone run code on your server without even logging in, which is bad, and then the details leaked before the patch was even out, which is worse, and it works on WordPress and MediaWiki and Magento and Joomla and Laravel, and Censys says like 1.5 million servers are running a version with no fix, so the NSA was like "take your system offline," and the FBI was like "take your system offline," and CISA and the UK and CERT-EU were all like "take your system offline," and then the Prime Minister of Japan, the actual Prime Minister, posted at 5:55 in the morning telling 48.8 million people to take their system offline, so everyone took their system offline, like the Dutch cybersecurity agency took its own website offline, and the Dutch parliament went offline, and the Port of Rotterdam went offline, and Finland and France and Denmark started pulling government sites, and Wikipedia went down, and Archive.org went down, and Asana and GOG and Something Awful went down, and the University of Vienna's webmail went down for some reason, and that's just PHP. Because GitLab also dropped a CVSS 10.0, which is the highest score they give out, for a bug that's been there since 2014, so that's every self-hosted GitLab for twelve years, and then LiteLLM 1.107.0 got hijacked and shipped a credential stealer and a remote access trojan in every single wheel and the Docker images, including latest, and you didn't even have to import it, just installing it was enough, and it's the second time this year, and then Railway paused every deployment on the entire platform because someone got into the environment variables, so now everyone has to rotate every secret they've ever stored there, and TiDB Cloud said someone was walking around inside with stolen credentials for basically a month and an extortion group says they took 10.6 terabytes, and Zeabur got breached for the second time in two months and is just shutting down, like the whole company, and Node.js patched remote code execution and a TLS bypass, and CISA says Plex is being actively exploited, and someone took over 300 Tor exit relays to steal SSH passwords, and SafePay ransomware has hit over 600 critical infrastructure orgs, and India's biggest bank filed a data loss incident, and Japan has been in an official state of emergency in cyberspace since October 9, which honestly explains the 5:55 AM post. Oh, and eMudhra, a certificate authority that's issued over 60 million certificates, whose entire job is proving websites are who they say they are, was supposed to be using private keys that are random numbers over a hundred digits long, and one of them was 4. Just 4. And the others were like 66 and 237. Anyway, it's Wednesday.

Fork-and-Flush: help your agents escape Idea Basins!! I love thinking of AutoResearch as Idea Descent: a metric of interest goes down, as a function of ideas/experiments, where the agents get pulled towards one idea or another. But we've seen very often an agent develop this weird tunnel vision, and honing in just one type of "idea", kinda like GD stuck in a local minimum. We studied this and seems we can fix it with Fork-and-Flush, a super simple and kinda cute idea. Every so often, fork the agent into T copies in the same workspace but empty the context, let them run for a bit, and continue from the best one. If you like the GD analogy, it's basically basin hopping en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basin-…. BTW we found a silly way of also plotting "idea basins": an LLM rewrites every experiment as a spec and answers a few thousand binary queries "is Experiment A closer to B or to C?". Then we embed this NXN matrix into 2D and indeed see in many cases that each run saturates into a small region and keeps polishing it. We call these idea basins! At equal compute Fork and Flush beats single runs and best-of-N on 12/13 long-horizon tasks (some 4+ days), and in my own research projects it's been working really well! BTW we only use it at test time, but it could also be part of training or RL. "My brigade killed 160 to 170 people . Only one man was suspected of carrying a weapon. No one saw the weapon; it was night, and he had something with him that could have been interpreted as a weapon. all of these dead were reported as terrorists." 10 IDF soldier testimonies:
Mehr als 70.000 Tote, noch mehr Verletzte, endlose Zerstörung: Hier berichten zehn israelische Soldaten über Rachegefühle, Schießbefehle und »Kollateralschäden«. Link in X-Bio.

The number of smart people taking this chart at face value is astonishing. It’s completely unsourced and it ends on October 15, which is four days from now. I feel like I’m going crazy.
If confirmed, this is telling: Russian data centres get hit, and online activity around AfD suddenly plummets. 📉 So much talk about German patriotism… then the connection from Russia goes down. 🤔🇷🇺

Absolutely psychotic: people are digging their families out of rubble with their bare hands and an American charity is installing AI audio recording to make sure nobody sounds too resentful about it.
A U.S. charity in Gaza is worried that teachers at its schools might stray from a curriculum it says promotes peace and tolerance, so it plans to record classroom conversations and use artificial intelligence to flag speech deemed “hateful” or “inciting.” apnews.com/article/gaza-chil…

'Economic freedom' — the freedom to exploit the working class and the global south.
There are currently 134.8 million households in the US. Just ~1.4 million of these households, or 1%, now control a record 32.5% of US household wealth. Never in US history has there been a wealth divide even remotely close to what we are seeing now.

The x axis is what? Freedom units?
Economic freedom is the only surefire way that humans have discovered to create wealth. stevestewartwilliams.com/p/a…

Fico is trying to warn the europoors that, in the meetings, the euroloons are preparing to destroy the continent in a war with Russia. Europoors, THEY WANT YOU TO DIE IN A TRENCH. This is real. 🇪🇺
I AM DEEPLY CONCERNED THAT ALL THAT IS BEING SOUGHT NOW IS A PRETEXT FOR A MAJOR CONFLICT BETWEEN NATO AND RUSSIA.

I created a little game to help you (or your kids) learn touch typing. It's called Letterby and it supports English, German, and Swedish (which coincidentally is the languages that my kids speak). You can try it out here: dnouri.github.io/Letterby/

I noticed that kids use computers at school much earlier these days. I can't say I'm a big fan of 11-year-olds using a computer to write in class, not knowing how to write cursive, and before they learn how to use a compass (the thing to draw circles with) or a ruler...

The idea behind this little game is this: If you're using a computer at a young age, make that small effort to learn touch typing, which at a young age is probably very easy to learn. Being able to type fast on a keyboard still seems like an obvious, future-proof win.

"It's a pity that there is such self censorship and that European parliamentarians do not want to hear those Ukrainians who want peace" 💯
On the day of my speech, I was barred from entering the European Parliament. I directly attribute this to Zelenskyy’s sanctions. But the speech will go ahead anyway, because I know that I represent a huge segment of society that longs for peace and wants to be heard.

The next time someone says "but Sweden has free healthcare!" I'll be very inclined to buy them a ticket to visit a hospital in Austria or Portugal or any other country so they can experience an actually functioning public healthcare system. There's no reasonable healthcare in Sweden without private insurance. And that includes healthcare for your children. Sorry facade of a system that just tries to get rid of you and avoid proper treatment at every point in the process.
