โTreatmentโ available at small-town kirana (grocery) shop. The patient, worried about the side effects of allopathic (modern) medicine, chose to opt for โAyurvedicโ instead. Literacy isnโt the issue- health illiteracy and trust on therapy is. This patient is a school headmaster.

A 38-year-old woman presented with acute onset bilaterally symmetrical inflammatory polyarthritis of both large and small joints over a period of 20 days. She had no previous comorbidities and no history of antecedent events
ALT Hyperpigmented, nonpruritic skin lesions over the tip of the nose with cutaneous thickening
ALT Additional areas of hyperpigmentation were observed over the palms

Rheumatology is not just about aches and pains.
Rheumatology deals with autoimmune inflammatory conditions of connective tissues ( #Rheumatoid arthritis #Lupus, scleroderma, sjรถgrenโs syndrome etc) , #vasculitis, auto-inflammatory rheumatic diseases(long list of rare diseases), fibromyalgia etc.
These diseases can involve any organ of the body.

๐ฅ Herbal Supplements that Make Lupus Worse!

A recent study evaluated herbal supplement intake in 673 patients who had #lupus #SLE or #dermatomyositis
The following herbs caused lupus flares so avoid these:
๐Elderberry
๐Ashwagandha
๐Echinacea
๐Spirulina
๐Alfalfa
๐Chlorella
Fewer patients took the following. But as a group, 17% of lupus patients flared:
- moringa
- Zyflamend (blend of 10 herbs)
- herbal teas
- green drinks
- immune-system boosting supplements
- protein powders
BOTTOM LINE:
Avoid supplements that "boost" or "support" the immune system.
The lupus immune system is already overactive (or boosted), you don't want to boost it more!
Patients taking turmeric (curcumin) did NOT flare. One patient with dermatomyositis got better.

1. Patient's immune status? Is host immunocompromised?
2. Localisation (site/systemic) of infection in the host. Severity?
3. Suspected pathogenic organism? It's bacterial, right?.. Right?
