Milton Friedman makes an observation that cuts across the political spectrum: almost everyone claims to believe in freedom and competition in the abstract, while quietly carving out an exception for their own industry or their own interest.
Businesses love competition, until it applies to them. Intellectuals love freedom, until it means freedom for people they disagree with. Friedman says those who catch these contradictions and call it hypocrisy are right to do so.

Milton Friedman drew on economist James Schlesinger's observation that politics is "the art of calculated cheating." There's an art to distributing visible benefits while burying costs. This explains a recurring pattern: politicians benefit from crises because a crisis creates something to visibly fix. Without a crisis, there's nothing to distribute, no benefit to claim credit for. Friedman's point is about the structural incentive behind why declared crises are so persistent, and why greater public understanding of that incentive is the only real check on it.

.@Mark_Sanchez came to Indy, as reported and charged, started a fight, got stabbed and left a 69 year old hospitalized.
Sanchez did this. Sanchez is to blame. Not Indianapolis. @FOXSports should apologize to Indy.
@GovBraun @LGMicahBeckwith and a bunch of others blamed Indy, then tried to backtrack by deleting tweets when facts came out.
Always had air for the facts. Don’t be first to post, be right when you post. Braun and Beckwith took the hits because they deserved them.
Those noticing that Indy has a real problem with violence, and noticing the comments from @IndyMayorJoe and @ryanmearsindy, said so. Mears doesn’t prosecute. Hogsett doesn’t lead. It’s been a problem for years.
This led to the “you’re making it political” screaming. The problem is that it is political. Hogsett and Mears are Democrats and don’t address the issue. Their actions prove it.
That’s why their posts about Sanchez got such pushback, including from me. And they deserved all of it.
What mostly got people crazed was the idea that two things can be true at the same time. In this case it’s three things:
1- Sanchez is to blame here, not Indy, based on all reporting and the charging document. He’ll defend himself in court.
2- People conditioned to blame Indy immediately blamed Indy without having any facts to back them up.
3- Indianapolis leadership has failed Indianapolis. And the Hogsett/Mears posts are seen as the pure, empty politics that they are.
