🇵🇱"I wanted Warsaw to be great".
87 years have passed since Stefan Starzyński, the mayor of Warsaw, was arrested by the Germans.
During the fateful days of September 1939, Stefan Starzyński did not leave Poland, as many high-ranking government officials had done. Instead, he remained in Warsaw, becoming one of the organizers of the city's defence against the German invasion. His radio addresses, broadcast during the siege of Warsaw, lifted the spirits of the city's residents.
In a radio address delivered on 23 September 1939, Starzyński solemnly declared:
🗨️I wanted Warsaw to be great. I believed it would be great. My colleagues and I drew up plans for the great Warsaw of the future. And Warsaw is great!
As established by an investigation conducted by the IPN, Stefan Starzyński was murdered by the Germans between 21 and 23 December 1939, in Warsaw or its vicinity.
The murder was carried out by shooting by three Gestapo officers: Oberscharführer Hermann Schimmann, Hauptscharführer Weber and Unterscharführer Perlbach.

You know my love for Cafe Cinema but this is probably my favourite place in Berlin.
I'd even say this is one of my favourite bars anywhere. – at Montréal, Québec

Serbia’s public broadcaster has apologized twice in the last 35 years for spreading regime propaganda: first for the Milošević propaganda that fuelled the wars of aggression in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, and now for serving as a mouthpiece of the Vučić regime.
📺 “We reported events one-sidedly for years”: Serbian TV apologizes to viewers after Vučić's party loses the election
Radio Television of Vojvodina (RTV) opened its news broadcast with footage of celebrations following the Student List's election victory — scenes it had failed to show the previous evening.
“For years, we failed to fulfill our duty. We kept silent, turned a blind eye, reported events one-sidedly, and failed to ask the necessary questions. For that, we owe our viewers an apology,” news anchor Goran Eror said.
Following the controversy, RTV's acting editor-in-chief Nenad Čačić resigned.
A similar incident occurred in Hungary, where state television also apologized to viewers after Viktor Orbán's election defeat.

I believe this is Hotell Viru, which the Soviets asked a Finnish firm to build. The firm went bankrupt, and the Finnish government paid to complete it out of pride. Only place foreigners could stay in Eesti SSR and was bugged in every corner.

I don’t think I ever believed I’d see a newspaper paragraph like this: President Trump ‘said he would welcome immigrants from Denmark but not from Norway “because I didn’t get the Nobel Prize, so I don’t want anybody from Norway”.’

Only Sweden is allowed to mock Norway. But when other countries do, we Swedes will stand up for our dear neighbours. Because we are siblings, and you stand up for your family.

You can learn a surprising amount about a European country by asking one question:
When does the café close?
Europe shares coffee.
Not café culture.
