🚨 SOUTH YORKSHIRE POLICE OFFICER JAILED AFTER POSING AS PAEDOPHILE HUNTER TO BLACKMAIL CHILD ABUSE IMAGE SUSPECT A corrupt South Yorkshire Police officer who pretended to be a paedophile hunter and attempted to blackmail a man she had arrested for suspected child sexual abuse image offences has been jailed for three years and four months. PC Marie Thompson, 29, abused her position as an investigating officer to demand £3,500 from the suspect in an attempt to pay off debts linked to her gambling addiction. Thompson, who worked in Doncaster, pleaded guilty to blackmail and perverting the course of justice at Leeds Crown Court before being sentenced to 40 months in prison on 30 October. The court heard that Thompson was responsible for investigating a man arrested on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children. After interviewing him and releasing him under investigation, Thompson used information obtained through her police role to target him financially. In January, the man received an email from a fake account claiming to represent an organisation called "Paedophile Hunters". The message demanded £3,500 and threatened to expose information about his arrest unless the money was transferred into a specified bank account. The email claimed the payment would ensure the information remained confidential and disguised the demand as a donation to an organisation supposedly protecting children. Later that day, the man's partner received a text message demanding a response before the end of the day. Rather than paying, the couple reported the attempted blackmail to South Yorkshire Police. However, the officer responsible for dealing with their complaint was Thompson herself. Instead of investigating the threats, she deliberately falsified police records to conceal her involvement. She falsely recorded that the man did not wish to pursue the complaint and subsequently told him that the person responsible could not be traced. The court heard that Thompson also manipulated entries in her police pocket notebook, including altering the telephone number used to send the threatening message to conceal that it belonged to her. In another attempt to cover her tracks, she sent a further email pretending to be someone apologising for having overheard information about the man's arrest. Her deception began to unravel in March 2023 when another officer took over the original investigation. During a visit, the man mentioned the blackmail attempt and explained that Thompson had claimed she was unable to identify the person responsible. The officer checked the telephone number used to contact the man's partner and discovered it matched the personal mobile number Thompson had provided during her police vetting process. Further examination of Thompson's laptop uncovered evidence linking her to the threatening email. The court heard that Thompson was suffering from a severe gambling disorder and had accumulated significant debts when she committed the offences. The man she targeted was subsequently convicted of offences involving indecent images of children and received a suspended prison sentence. In a victim impact statement, he expressed anger that a police officer entrusted with investigating serious offences had exploited his circumstances for personal financial gain. Following her guilty plea, South Yorkshire Police issued Thompson with a Regulation 13 notice, a procedure used when probationary officers are considered unsuitable to remain in the force. She resigned from South Yorkshire Police on 16 October, just two weeks before being sentenced. The Crown Prosecution Service condemned Thompson's conduct as a serious abuse of public trust, highlighting how she attempted to turn a criminal investigation into an opportunity for financial gain before falsifying official records to conceal her actions.
