Mack Brown reveals the turning point with Vince Young came after he benched him and told him to grow up when he threw his helmet, then the next morning he watched his old film and realized they had coached the real Vince out of him “Next week we’re playing Missouri at home. They’re leading the league in defense. Vince throws nine completions the first half — five to us and four to them. My goodness. I benched him. He threw his helmet.” “First time I benched him, I walked over and put my hand over my mouth and said, ‘Okay, grow up. You’ve got millions of people watching how you’re going to respond. I benched you and Chance Mock stood up and pulled for you, man. Get on that sideline. You be a cheerleader.’” “We win the game 28-24. Next morning I have him in, just he and I, and I’m sitting there watching his high school film. I said, ‘I don’t know what happened to this guy. We need him back. I lost him somewhere.’” “I think media, family, everybody talking about throwing motion. Everybody says, ‘You don’t look like Peyton Manning. We’re not throwing enough with you.’ We’ve lost him.” “Then I took all of his highlights at Texas where he’s really good and I said, ‘I need this guy back. This is the guy I need right here. Not the other guy.’ We built his confidence back. We got it back. He threw for 250 yards, rushed for 250 yards. He was 11 of 15. We won 52-17. He never lost another game.” “When he got command of that huddle, when he got command of that team, and we started doing what he did best, we won a national championship. So I’ve always said when they say ‘my offense’, it’s not my offense. It’s not your offense. Who’s your best player? Who needs to get the ball? That’s what we’ve got to do.”
