She never imagined the man she shared a bed with and the little sister she grew up protecting had a secret they were hiding from her. One WhatsApp discovery made her question how long she'd been the last person to know.

He kept showing up for her, even when he was struggling himself. All he wanted was to feel loved without having to beg for it. But when he finally told her he was done, her response left him with a question he never thought he'd ask.

I made my stepmother so miserable that she left my father, and I'm not sure I'd call it a win. My mom was sick for four years. Not a clean, dramatic illness, a slow one, with good months and bad months and a house that smelled like hospital soap. I was thirteen when it started. I learned to cook, to read pill schedules, and to sleep with one ear open. My dad was there, in the way a man can be in the room and gone at the same time. He worked late. He took "business trips" that didn't make sense. He started wearing cologne again, the kind he'd stopped using when I was small. I found out about her by accident. I was fifteen and borrowing his phone to call a pharmacy. A message from a contact saved as "Dana's Accounting" read: Miss you already. Is she asleep? I knew who "she" was. I stood in the garage with that phone in my hand and heard my mother coughing through the wall. I didn't tell anyone. I thought Mom had enough to carry. That was my first mistake, and I made it for a good reason.

The Ledger Thanos did not ask Natasha Romanoff to kneel. That was what unsettled her most. He simply sat across from her on the dark deck of the Sanctuary II, chains on her wrists, and poured two cups of something warm. "You were made into a weapon," he said. "A girl taken, trained, and pointed. You know what I am, Widow. I am the one who finally asks why the weapon never gets to choose." "Flattering," Natasha said. "Is this the part where you offer me a job?" "An offer, yes." He set a small glowing sphere on the table. Inside it, a tiny city flickered with life. "Your Red Room is gone, but there are a thousand more like it across the stars. Children trained to kill, because their worlds have too little to feed them. I can end that. All of it, in a single act. All I need is someone who understands those children well enough to choose which worlds I begin with." The room went quiet. She saw what he was doing. He wasn't threatening her, which would have been easy to resist. He was handing her the one thing she had wanted since she was twelve: the power to make it stop. "You want me to pick who disappears." "I want you to pick who is spared," he said gently. "Surely that is a mercy." Natasha looked at the glowing city in the sphere, then at the cup in her hands. For one long moment she let herself imagine saying yes. Then she thought of Yelena, and of Clint at a kitchen table, and of the thousand small, stubborn, unplanned things that had made her more than what she'd been built for. "You know what they gave me in the Red Room?" she said. "A list of reasons. Every order came with one. This man is dangerous. This one deserves it. They were always good reasons, and I believed them." She slid the cup back across the table. "Then someone gave me a choice with no good reason attached, and I took it. That's the only thing that ever made me free." Thanos tilted his head. "And what choice is that?" "The one you can't make." She smiled, tired and sharp. "You don't want to save anyone, big guy. You want to be the only one who gets to decide. That's just a bigger Red Room." For the first time, something flickered across his face. It wasn't anger. It was the discomfort of being seen. He rose, and the sphere dimmed in his hand. "You will die believing you were right." "Probably," Natasha said. "But I'll die choosing." Hours later, a crack of light split the hull, and a familiar voice crackled through her comm: "Nat? Tell me you're still alive." She looked at the empty chair across from her. "Still choosing," she whispered.

For six months, I thought my landlord was entering my apartment when I wasn't home. My food would disappear. My bathroom mirror would be wiped clean. Sometimes I'd return from work and find the television switched on, even though I always unplugged it before leaving. I complained to the landlord. He changed the locks twice. Then one Friday, I came home early and found a woman sitting at my dining table. She was wearing my clothes. Not similar clothes. My actual clothes. She was eating from my favourite plate, scrolling through my phone, and humming a song I hadn't heard since childhood. I screamed. She looked up, completely unfazed. Then she said something that made my blood run cold. You're home early today. I grabbed my phone and called the police. But before I could finish explaining, she stood up, walked towards my bedroom, and said: Please don't wake Mum. She's been having a difficult week. My mother had been dead for eleven years.
