New post on substack (link in thread). Have tried to write both a Hindi and an English version! Based on PLFS data showing the intergenerational persistence of advantage and the possibility of upward mobility.
As a bonus, some Hindi poetry (and a song if you don't mind some amateur vocals)!

There’s a growing anti-migrant sentiment in Punjab and Haryana, one that we cannot afford. In this opinion piece in today’s HT I unpack why our economies are so heavily dependent on migrants from UP and Bihar.

New CSIE working paper (wonkish!) with @amitbasole and Pratyush Priyadarshi. Link at the end.
India's labour surveys sort households into strata before sampling. This can make estimates more precise, as compared to simple random sampling, but does it work? 🧵
We find that no single design helps across the board. Consumption-based strata work well for income but poorly for participation and unemployment. Whether stratification helps depends largely on how well the stratifying variable correlates with the outcome.
We propose a scheme combining 10th-pass and graduate attainment (LS-GS). It raises the median gain over PLFS by about 14% for unemployment and 17% for income.
Comments welcome, especially from people who work with survey data.

India's labour force has a large gender gap against women. There is a gender gap in earnings too, which falls with education.
Women outnumber men in being school teachers, but here too there is a glass ceiling.

We are no experts. @MoharirAdvait and I wrote it because we were stumped by the incapacity of a long-standing Act—the backbone of rural India—to meet its commitment. The new bill strips this commitment away, making what’s happening in WB a real possibility for other states.
. @Vijayshreeeee and I write in today's @the_hindu on how the NREGA has collapsed in West Bengal over the last few years
Key takeaway: Whatever little work exists is taken up more by job SC/ST households!
