Shell, with Headquarters in Lambeth, made £7.4 billion in 3 months 🤯 This is a climate emergency 🌍 We are asking Shell to contribute to Lambeth’s climate resilience plan, in proportion to its share of global emissions 💰 It's time they helped pay to protect Lambeth 🫵

👏Abolish 👏the 👏Commonwealth 👏xitter.cf/b_judah/status/2113362…
It is time to admit that the Commonwealth does not only not serve its purpose, but works against its premise of post-imperial comity. This is because it has become a little more than a poorly attended biannual summit whose only purpose seems to be to for Caribbean countries to lobby Britain for reparations. This does nothing but worsen these relationships. My view was Botchwey was the last chance to try and pull the organisation back from this dead end but this had clearly failed. CHOGM is going ahead without any major reforms to its structure or meaningful agenda, resented by those in government involved in it as a result. It is now only a matter of time before Prime Ministers stop attending our next King cuts the cord and eventually a new CANZUK-type summit or body is pursued.

I always marvel at the fact that getting a postpaid phone contract or an apartment connected to utilities in a country like Singapore or South Korea would be virtually impossible without the proper documentation, yet someone alleged to have entered the country fraudulently can spend two decades rising to become one of the most powerful people in America, seemingly without anyone taking much notice, all while building a political career around opposition to the country’s traditional values. Imagine a Somali woman moving to China, joining the Chinese Communist Party, publicly denouncing the racism and sexism of its leaders, amassing considerable wealth while holding public office, and only a quarter of a century later having Xi Jinping decide to investigate her background. It makes America look astonishingly sloppy.

Imagine declining the opportunity to profit from one’s own favourable judgement! In certain circles, this would be considered a betrayal of friendship, if not a failure of public duty. How have the dumbing down of expertise and the machinery of cultural self-promotion in the cultural sphere made it easier to manufacture the appearance of authority than to exercise the aesthetic judgement that ought to justify it? 👉 Art Attacks: salemlola.substack.com/p/the…

The identity of a skeleton found in a Roman sarcophagus in the grounds of Westminster Abbey more than 150 years ago appears closer to being solved. The limestone sarcophagus was excavated on the North Green in 1869. It bears an inscription to Valerius Amandinus – a wealthy Briton who lived in the city in around 300 to 400 AD. Also sculpted on the lid however is a Latin cross dating from the 10th or 11th century, suggesting that the human remains which were found within might belong to an Anglo-Saxon who had died many centuries later, when the coffin was re-used. The identity of that person has been a mystery ever since. Now new research by our Consultant Archaeologist, Professor Warwick Rodwell, published in the Journal of the British Archaeological Association, concludes that the bones belonged to a high-ranking medieval monk. Professor Rodwell believes the most likely candidate is Aelfwig, who served as Abbot of the medieval Benedictine monastery and died in around 1020. Another possibility is Aelfwig’s successor, Wulnoth, who died in 1049 and is also presumed to have been buried at the Abbey. Reflecting on his research, Professor Rodwell said: 'We have two viable contenders for the occupant of the sarcophagus. We do not know the date of birth of either. But either would fit equally well if we assume the Abbot was in his early twenties when the appointment was made and close to fifty when he died. The fact Aelfwig was already a monk of Westminster might favour him.' You can see the sarcophagus on permanent display in the our museum, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries.

Some big personal news: I'm moving to join Works in Progress as executive editor, starting next month. I have been hoping for an opportunity to work with @bswud and @s8mb for more than a decade, and I'm incredibly excited to finally have one. WIP is expanding on every front right now. We'll soon begin coverage of business and finance, as well as putting out more reported features. To that end, we'll be hiring more writers and reporters in the year to come. I'm planning to remain based in the US to help build out our presence here. The print edition of WIP has existed for less than 12 months, but sometime in the next week or so we will reach our 10,000th paying print subscriber. It's a group that now includes people who've been at the highest echelons of government and who run the world's biggest public companies. We’re already on track to 3x that number next year. We'll be in store at Barnes & Noble, Hudson News and independent newsagents next week too. I think WIP is providing something that people are craving from physical media right now: fewer, extremely well-crafted pieces in a beautifully designed form. Issues now feature an amazing group of columnists, including Tyler Cowen, Dan Wang and Stephen Kotkin. Each edition is better than the last. You'll see us in more and more places next year too. In January, our new weekly documentary films will launch on YouTube. We're expanding into the events space, with a new series in North America. The sky is the limit from here on out.
