when I was a teen in the 90s, I had a foreboding sense of dread about the future. the dystopia that we find ourselves in now surpasses my wildest expectations, as I see almost everyone I know irl ignore an ongoing pandemic and genocide

‘Radical’ comes from a Latin word meaning "root." Because roots are the deepest part of a plant, ‘radical’ came to describe things understood as fundamental or essential. ‘Radical change’ was a change at the root of a system.

so basically women read everything and men hate fun, then wonder why women have richer imaginations, broader interests and better taste in literally everything.
Books men like to read vs. Books women like to read:

There’s a book about this
Much of your adulthood will be spent dodging miserable people who think they're smarter than you because you're hopeful when they're not. They mistake your strength of spirit for naivete, and preach what has made them despair like it's wisdom. Everything is spiritual warfare.

We will save us. You cannot stop fate.
Millenials, I love you. I love us. At the risk of sounding totally cringe, I fucking love us. We’re cynics and cycle-breakers. Deeply traumatized and deeply unserious. Clear-eyed and resilient and pragmatic. We’re survivors. We were handed so much hope and so much despair almost simultaneously, and we have become who we needed when we were young. If anyone can save us, it’s us. 🩵💙

"Nothing will change even if they did win." The whole world is about to change, and even the old kings have no idea or control. This world will be very different by 2029.

I'll never forget what a famous hacker once said to me on this platform: "The Internet was a mistake." I have never been able to reconcile that in my mind enough to come up with a retort.

Someone quoted one of my tweets about the pandemic and said it's almost 2027. Yeah, jackass. And we're STILL ignoring a pandemic. There are over a million new Covid cases PER DAY. Right now. Those are the facts, not our fault you're in denial.
A disturbing thing about this pandemic is the collective refusal to acknowledge reality and harm being done. There is no harm, and no one is responsible. There is nothing to be done about a pandemic with an airborne virus, and if there is something to be done, it's on you.

Businesses are rejecting it at breakneck speed - mine included. It is giving customers disinformation and fucking up internal processes. Even the AI brain-fried people at the top are throwing in the towel.

Being covid conscious
Being right years ahead of others isn’t nearly as satisfying as people think. Nobody apologizes for treating you like a crazy. They just come back years later, repeating what you told them as if it’s some groundbreaking revelation because they finally heard it from someone else.

This isn't a thing yet, BTW. The bill remains before the legislature and could still be amended or delayed. Start making noise; this is 1000% about data centers.

There really was a golden period of web writing (pre socials) when you would get up every day and check Salon, Slate, Gawker, Jezebel, Pitchfork, Hipster runoff… maybe even Perez to remind you what never to be. RIP
This is so sad. I’m 54 years old and started reading Salon when I was in college. It was early proof that you could do great journalism on the web and (along with suck.com) made me think maybe I could make a living writing on the internet salon.com/2026/11/05/goodbye…

I remember thinking “this can’t possibly be the peak.” but it was.
Life was best during the late 90s and early 2000s. The internet just hit different, and everyone was still largely active and had community. It was a really good mix that was far healthier than what we have now.
