Honoured to be awarded paper of the year in EJSS for 2024! Our findings from the inaugural Female Athlete Research Camp demonstrated no measurable impact of ovarian hormones on physical performance. Huge team effort on this one 💪 Full paper here pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3887…

This paper was a culmination of the studies conducted during my PhD... We explored female athletes’ research experiences—81% were first-time participants due to low awareness, yet 94% would join again, highlighting a need for greater visibility/ access. journals.humankinetics.com/v…

Smith et al. (2025) found that girls don’t just want to have fun, they want to participate! 🙋‍♀️ In fact, 94% of female athletes indicated a willingness to participate in future studies. Check out this article featured in our September 2025 issue here 🔗 doi.org/10.1123/ijsnem.2024-…

New research: 24 hours of low energy availability affects sleep and recovery differently depending on whether it's caused by diet or exercise. Great paper by @ella__smith_ , @TStellingwerff, @LouiseMBurke, @MckayAlannah, and team. #HumanPerformance #HRV #LEA #Sleep
Another publication from this mega study! 20 athletes (10M, 10F): five 24h periods of altered EA in a Latin Square design. Exercise-induced LEA increased total sleep time and diet-induced LEA lowered overnight HR. Responses did not differ between sexes. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4052…

One more time for the people in the back… We have no evidence to support menstrual cycle phase-based training OR nutrition! Instead, we can support our female athletes as individuals, where their hormonal profile is just one of many factors to consider 🩸
"They're all myths. That's not true." 🙅‍♀️ Busting menstrual myths with Professor Kirsty Elliott-Sale, who says that there's no evidence to suggest that the phase of your cycle dictates how you should train, eat, or recover.

One of the most important tweets I’ve seen this year ⬇️ @DameSarahStorey has won 75 Paralympic medals and World titles across all phases of the menstrual cycle. Let that sink in. Female athletes: IT IS POSSIBLE TO WIN ON EVERY DAY OF THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE 💪🏻 Time to empower!
It’s so important to get the truth about “phase based training” out there. And working alongside @ElliottSale I’ve learned a lot! We’ve also deduced I must have won a medal or 2 on every day of my cycle at some point given I’ve got 75 Paralympic medals/World titles 💪🏻

Review accepted @ExpPhysiol Rhythms exist at various scales in physiology - from the basic units of metabolic regulation to whole systems and behavioural patterns - repeating within seconds or over decades Thanks @ella__smith_ for creating the figure in BioRender.com/s84n393
