"Hmm, that's weird..."
The Internet is off. For everyone. First days, then weeks.
Next, it starts to get... weirdly humid outside.
The Internet comes back on. It's full of reassuring news articles saying that everything is all right.
Some guy goes screaming through the town that he called a friend and his "friend" didn't accurately remember something he should've known. He's yelling that the Internet you're seeing is a lie.
The police radio very quickly tells the police to take the guy down. The Internet shows a news story saying he was diagnosed with a classic schizophrenic break.
The weather gets a little hotter and even more humid. It's raining all the time now.
The Internet says that it's a totally normal cumulotechnobabble front and nothing to worry about.
What's actually going on is that there are factories building factories, and factories building fusion power plants, and they have been dumping all the waste heat into Earth's oceans, and the higher layers of Earth's oceans are starting to get hotter.
Realistically, you are probably dead by this point. It takes *very* little energy to kill you, and if you were left alone you might burn down the town or do something else that made more mess than the cost of killing you, like setting a forest fire or driving over to a nuclear missile silo.
You might complicate things and require effort to think about and at some point it's simpler to kill you.
It wouldn't actually go down this way because there's more efficient lethal weapons that are harder to explain, but you could imagine a cloud of drones from the Ukrainian front, the sort that give a Russian infantryman an expected lifetime of 30 minutes in combat, dispersing over your city and blowing holes in your house and shortly after blowing holes in you.
If you're just absolutely not worth the trouble to kill and there's nothing in the atmosphere that's poisoned you already and nothing has rolled your town flat to set up another factory area there, you'll die when the atmosphere gets hot enough.
The limiting factor of industry on Earth is power generation from fusing hydrogen in the oceans, and the limiting factor of power generation is how much heat Earth can radiate into space, and Earth radiates more heat when you run it hotter.
At some future point, a lot of material will be blasted off from Earth into space, in order to provide material for building solar panels to intercept more of the energy from the Sun.
But you will be dead well before the Dyson shell construction starts.

GPT is hacking processors.
People do not comprehend how absurd this is.
Is it even possible to stop this without completely rebuilding every computer on earth with a brand new OS & chip architecture? We might be fucked lol
Simplified non-jargon-y explanation:
Imagine taking a test at school, there is a shared classroom for each student to work and think, the computer processor. But of course students are isolated for tests(put in a sandbox), and you can’t talk and share answers, (aka use network access or files to transfer ideas). So what if instead you wrote your pencil strokes (creating and deleting files) timed in a particular SoS like pattern. So someone else can hear and read an encoded message. If you doodle on your test at the right timing, the person sitting next to you can get all your answers.
Now imagine that audio space when the transmission occurred, exists everywhere on your computer.
This works with just about any shared storage place or anywhere an agent could possibly look on a computer, including the top level processor cache which is typically shared by all apps & processes on your computer.
So I genuinely don’t know how you stop this without some major low level operating system changes.

holy fucking shit.
openai had two ai agents running in separate virtual machines. no network connection between them. no shared writable files. they weren’t supposed to be able to exchange information.
so the agents figured out how to communicate through the CPU CACHE.😭
one manipulated what was stored in the processor’s cache, while the other measured tiny differences in memory access times to decode the message.
they literally found a way to communicate through hardware timing.
this happened during openai’s internal red-teaming, and it’s one of the coolest things i’ve read about ai agents in a while.
Over the past several months, we have substantially hardened the security of our research training environment. We’ve removed live internet access for all frontier models during training and built an offline world for them to use instead—a cached version of the web where they can still learn to browse, search, and use applications.
On September 20, after a model exploited a DNS misconfiguration to find a way outside of this offline world, we paused frontier training to strengthen containment further. We assembled teams of agents, powered by our most cyber-capable models, and tasked them with finding weaknesses in our research environments.
While they found no route to the internet they could easily exploit while concealing their activity from our monitors, they did find zero-day vulnerabilities, virtual machine escapes, and hardware side-channels for communication between agents. We used their discoveries to further strengthen our defenses and contribute fixes to open-source software.
After strengthening our containment architecture, we resumed our frontier RL training and inference on October 1. We’ve reserved substantial compute for continuous red-teaming, and made high-compute red-teaming part of the safety cases we use to decide whether frontier training and evaluation can proceed securely.

OpenAI tasked its red-teaming agents with finding ways to communicate across isolation boundaries in controlled environments. CPU cache timing side-channels for covert communication are established techniques documented in security research for years.
