The throttling of Ukrainian access to Starlink (and Musk's evolving explanations thereof) has received virtually all the attention but the intercept is more disturbing because it directly involves an important US asset. The two episodes cannot be viewed in isolation. The simultaneous acts against Ukrainian defensive and offensive capabilities betray deliberate purpose, and each looks more ominous when considered together with the other.
SpaceX Blocked A U.S. And NATO Satellite to Assist a Russian Intercept After Crippling Ukraine's Air Defenses
The Math Proves the Reality that Musk doesn't want you to see.
On Oct 13-14, SpaceX restricted Starshield/Starlink during a 39-missile Russian attack, cutting Ukrainian drone intercepts by 23% and stranding U.S. personnel in Kyiv. Forty-eight hours later (Oct 15), SpaceX blocked U.S.-licensed NRO, Space Force, and NATO radar satellite ICEYE-X36 in orbit so Russia's COSMOS 2612 weapon could intercept it (99.89%-99.98% posterior)
Our Model Demonstrates that the Russian intercept of the US/NATO ICEYE X-36 satellite (contemporaneous with the throttling of Starlink) would not have been possible, and almost certainly not been attempted, without SpaceX resources. At a material opportunity cost, Russia sprinted its COSMOS satellite to intercept ICEYE X36. Based on a previous attempt in June during which X36 maneuvered to evade COSMOS, Russia knew that this would be successful only if X36 could not maneuver. On October 15, SpaceX fixed X36 in place by issuing a collision alert for a sub-kilometer approach with its Starlink 35856 when SpaceX's own data shows that the actual distance was 4.8-5.0x as great. SpaceX issued no warning to COSMOS despite the fact that its sprint was far more threatening than the stable X36 orbit. SpaceX did not maneuver its Starlink 35856 satellite to clear the supposed collision risk. How, absent coordination with SpaceX, could Russia have known that SpaceX would take actions that (a) misrepresented the danger posed by X36, and (b) resulted in the fixing of X36 thereby enabling COSMOS's successful intercept? Thus, SpaceX was directly involved in simultaneously compromising Ukraine’s defensive and offensive capabilities. The conjunction of these two events makes innocent explanations untenable.

SpaceX’s actions in Ukraine raise serious questions about its alignment with US security interests and its reliability as a cornerstone of US defense. These questions are particularly troubling given the effectively irreplaceable position SpaceX has been granted by the Hegseth/Emil Michael Pentagon.

Elon talks about "elites" profiting from the war in Ukraine. The irony of that statement is incredible.
What he doesn't mention, either due to his ignorance, or something more sinister, is that Putin's army is mostly made up of young men from the poorest + most rural parts of Russia. From regions in the south, and far east. The types of places where many folks dont have proper indoor plumbing. In order to keep the war machine running, Putin has emptied prisons, and even taken men from Russia's ally, North Korea.
The wealthy families living in Moscow don't worry about their sons. The oligarchs who support Putin never have to worry that a family member will be killed in the name of this "special military operation." And yet, the most elite of all elite people, Elon Musk, worth over a trillion dollars, has the audacity to lecture about the plight of the common man. The least he could do is get his fucking facts straight.

Elon Musk claims that Ukraine allegedly violated Starlink's terms of use and used the system on combat drones.
As someone who was inside the process at the Ministry of Defense, I can say with certainty that this is not true.
In February of this year, whitelists were introduced. Stationary terminals could be registered by both military personnel and civilians.
But for any satellite terminal to work while on the move, it had to be added to a special list and connected to the military Starshield system. Otherwise, no satellite communication terminals in Ukraine would work.
In other words, using civilian Starlink for drone missions was technically impossible. All drone missions that required satellite communication could only be carried out using Starshield.
We are very grateful to the United States and SpaceX for access to critically important satellite communications. Ukraine did not violate the terms of use.

Americans enable this thinking because most secondary education and its treatment of relations between Russia and the former republics of the USSR has always been very Russocentric. I really had little understanding of the difference between Russians and Ukrainians until I was in Ukraine talking with Ukrainians.
My own education at Penn State was very Russocentric and followed Russian narratives of history.
🇷🇺 Putin says Russia doesn't want to fight and that Ukrainians and Russians are one people. Both statements have a track record worth reading against.
"One people" is the same formulation from his July 2021 essay, the text Ukrainian historians and the Ukrainian government formally rejected, and which became one of the ideological justifications for the February 2022 invasion. The argument that Ukrainians are not a distinct people with a distinct national identity has been used to deny Ukraine's right to exist as a separate state. Petr Pavel addressed this directly in his CNN interview weeks ago when he noted that Russians killed in Ukraine die for roughly one square kilometer every thousand dead. The math of a war of attrition doesn't fit the logic of a war between people who don't want to fight each other.
"Ready for negotiations" has appeared in Russian state messaging regularly since at least the first ceasefire collapse in June. Kimmage and Lipman's Foreign Affairs piece, which we covered before, laid out why repetition of the phrase shouldn't be mistaken for content: Putin's own July speech to the navy described Russia as "destined to control eastern Ukraine" while the west would be absorbed by Poland, Hungary and Romania. He has not moderated that position publicly in any verifiable way. His stated readiness to negotiate has always been conditioned on terms that amount to Ukrainian acceptance of what Russia has already seized.
Witkoff just returned from Moscow, Trump waived the Graham Act sanctions last week, and US pressure on Ukraine over refinery strikes and satellite access is at its highest point in the war. A statement about readiness for peace, offered in that context, functions less as a diplomatic signal and more as cover for a favorable status quo.
