Serbia isn't just polarised, it's increasingly split between the democracy people want and the democracy they believe they already have. @CRTArs latest public opinion survey offers a fascinating snapshot as the country heads toward what could be a politically 💥 autumn. (🧵/1)

We are deeply concerned about reported violent incidents across a number of polling stations. Serbian citizens need to be able to exercise their democratic right to vote in a peaceful and safe environment. We call on all actors to remain calm, to act responsibly and refrain from violence and provocations and on the competent institutions to ensure safety of all involved in the electoral process.

Crucial parliamentary elections in Serbia are taking place amid serious concerns over electoral integrity, voter pressure, unequal campaign conditions and the voter register, as documented by @CRTArs Election Observation Mission. Follow live updates here: crta.plus/updates/live-blog/

Today, the Norwegian and Dutch ambassadors visited @CRTArs election monitoring headquarters. Domestic observers are vital to free and fair elections. Reports of intimidation and smear campaigns are concerning. All observers must be able to work without interference.

On national TV the Student List was portrayed negatively in over 80% of the time it was discussed, and the authorities took almost ¾ of airtime. Media regulator: no decision on CRTA’s 28 complaints. (🧵/3)

Pro-government media and officials are discrediting observers in advance and announcing “chaos” on Election Day, CRTA reports. Its 2,500 observers and parallel vote tabulation will check the result independently. (🧵/4)

Serbia votes Sunday. @CRTArs campaign report finds less freedom, more electoral engineering, greater inequality and deeper uncertainty: 116 incidents of violence and threats, almost ¾ of national 📺 airtime for those in power, and 250+ cases of misuse of public resources. (🧵/1)

An unaudited voter register, 30,000+ voters not in alphabetical order, and 7 candidate lists with doubtful signatures. CRTA’s preliminary report on Serbia’s campaign, days before Sunday’s vote. (🧵/2)

Together with Member States, we have made more progress on enlargement in the last two years than in the past two decades. It is now time to prepare for a larger Union. This requires realism and pragmatism. That is exactly what the Communication we published today brings. A concrete assessment of the impact of enlargement on our Union. And operational actions to guide our next steps.

Today, we've adopted a package on pre-enlargement policy reviews to prepare the 🇪🇺 for future enlargements and strengthen the protection of our values. We're getting ready for a bigger EU: one that is stronger, more resilient, and fit for the future. ℹ️ link.europa.eu/B4C3Wn

A lot of people in the western Balkans don't seem to have realised how big a problem France is for them when it comes to EU accession: Tiny Montenegro still hopes it will be the EU’s next member economist.com/europe/2026/09…

Ratko Mladić was convicted of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. The return of his remains to Belgrade reminds Europe of the darkest pages in our recent history. The glorification surrounding his death is incompatible with the values on which the EU path is built. That path requires confronting the past, genuine reconciliation and respecting the victims of war crimes. The values that underpin our common future are not negotiable. In this context, I have decided not to proceed with my planned visit to Serbia at this time.

It was a short step from sound cannon in March 2025 to fully operational spyware campaign against key opposition and student activists in #Serbia. There is zero excuse for @MartaKosEU & @vonderleyen to visit Belgrade 🇷🇸 in the coming month and create a false sense of normalcy.

New analysis alert 💡 Debates around 🇪🇺 enlargement have moved from “if” to “when” and now to “how”. But faster process also raises a fundamental question: how can the EU preserve credible democracy and Rule of Law conditionality along the way? (🧵/1) shorturl.at/77FhL

Our new analysis examines the four recent Member State proposals and so-called non-papers, their strengths and gaps, and the risks of granting significant early integration benefits without sufficiently strong and agile mechanisms to respond to democratic backsliding. (🧵/2)

⚖️ Enlargement should be accelerated - but not at the expense of democracy and the rule of law in candidate countries or the Union itself. (🧵/3) Read our full analysis and comments here: shorturl.at/77FhL
