My wife teaches English at a high school in Japan.
Last week, she gave her students a writing prompt:
"If you could be American for one day, what would you do?"
She read me the answers at dinner. She had to stop three times because she was laughing too hard.
"Own a pickup truck. I don't need a truck. I just want to say, 'Don't worry, I'll grab the truck.'"
"Have a garage. Not for a car. For 'stuff.'"
"Buy 48 rolls of toilet paper at Costco. I live with my parents. I want them anyway."
"Get a free refill. Then another one. Then another one. Until they ask me to leave. They won't ask me to leave."
"Water my lawn at 6 a.m. in a bathrobe and wave at my neighbor."
"Call my teacher 'dude.'" (My wife underlined this one. Twice.)
"Hang a flag on my house for no reason. Just because it's Tuesday."
And a lot of them wrote some version of this:
"Tell my dad I love him. Out loud. At the dinner table."
Then she had the class vote for the best answer.
The winner wasn't funny. It came from the funniest kid in the class. The truck kid.
"Stand up when the anthem plays, put my hand on my heart, and look around and see everybody else doing it too."
My wife asked him why he picked that one.
He shrugged.
"Because then you're never proud alone."

Street Law (1974) is a classic of the Italian poliziotteschi crime genre. It was one of the first breakout vigilante films of its kind, and its success helped spawn an entire wave of vigilante cinema in Italy.
The film stars Franco Nero, best known for the original Django, as a mild-mannered engineer who is taken hostage and savagely beaten during a robbery. When he fails to find justice through the legal system, he decides to hunt down the gang himself.
It’s a straightforward premise, but what’s interesting is how often the film deliberately undercuts audience expectations. Viewers familiar with Nero from his spaghetti westerns might expect him to deliver ruthless vengeance, but instead, he plays sharply against type, spending most of the film incompetent, physically outmatched and frightened out of his mind.
He isn’t driven by an altruistic sense of justice; he’s driven by male ego, the wounded pride of a man victimised at the hands of brutes. He pushes forward on adrenaline like a man still in shock, who never got a chance to process what happened to him. And the film’s breakneck pacing (so typical of poliziotteschi) locks us inside that panicked headspace from start to finish.
The action set pieces match this emotion perfectly, with frantic close-quarters gunfights and incredibly dangerous car chases that would be impossible to pull off under today’s safety standards.
The highlight is a junkyard chase featuring a spectacular long-lens, slow-motion shot of Nero running towards the camera with a Mustang in deadly pursuit behind him (see below). How Nero emerged without serious injury remains remarkable, especially considering he performed many of his own stunts.
If you’re new to the world of 1970s Italian poliziotteschi crime films, this is a great place to start. It’s available on Tubi, and I highly recommend it.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Walter Koenig’s passing.
Although we did not know each other well away from the set, we shared the later seasons of the original Star Trek series and the six films that followed.
What I observed, and what so many fans have expressed over the years, was a man who genuinely loved the Star Trek community.
At conventions, Walter was rarely content to remain behind a signing table. He preferred to be among the people who had kept Star Trek alive for so many decades.
That kind of genuine connection is rare, and it will be remembered by everyone who came into contact with him.
My condolences to his family, his friends, and the countless fans whose lives he touched.

What happens when the school bully and his victim have to share a chained demon in the basement is, genuinely, one of the darkest punchlines in recent horror cinema. Mon Mon Mon Monsters uses its pitch-black premise as a vehicle for biting social satire, turning the casual cruelty of teenage hierarchies into something more monstrous than the flesh-eating creature the boys are holding captive. The film is relentlessly, uncomfortably funny about how quickly victimhood and complicity can swap places, and it weaponizes that black comedy to land observations about mob mentality and cowardice that straight horror never could

Oct. 27, 1966 - Tonight on “Star Trek,” the USS Enterprise, responding to an old Earth distress signal, discovers a planet that resembles an abandoned, 1960s-style Earth. Beaming down to investigate, Captain Kirk (William Shatner), Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) discover a world populated entirely by children, led by a fiercely protective young girl named Miri (Kim Darby, left with Michael J. Pollard). The landing party learns that a life-extension experiment killed all the adults decades ago and left the surviving children—the “Onlies”—aging at an unnaturally slow rate. When the landing party contracts the fatal disease themselves, Kirk and McCoy must race against time to synthesize a cure before madness and death claim them all. 8:30 p.m. on NBC.

Last month Jalen Hurts gave $600,000 to Northeast High School in Philadelphia so the kids would not have to sit in classrooms that hit the 90s.
Now he is out, being treated for blood clots.
So on Monday, the kids went out onto their football field and spelled QB1 for him.
Here is the whole thing.
By Hurts' own count, 52 schools in Philadelphia still do not have real air conditioning. When it gets hot in September, kids get sent home early.
Hurts decided to do something about it. His foundation started a program called Keep It Cool.
The first gift was $200,000. It put air conditioning into 10 schools.
Then last month he went bigger. $600,000 for a new HVAC system at Northeast High, the biggest high school in the city. He stood up at the ceremony and said his goal was to take that number from 52 down to zero.
A few weeks later, the news came that he was being treated for blood clots, and the Philadelphia Eagles would have to play on without him.
The kids he had helped did not wait for anybody to tell them what to do.
Northeast High has a tradition going back at least 15 years of making shapes on the football field that you can only really see from above. Football players. The V-Settes, the school's majorette and dance team. Students from all over the building.
They had less than a week to put it together. On Monday, the day the Eagles played the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football, they walked out and formed two letters and a number.
QB1.
It took about three minutes to get everybody in place.
The woman who organized it said it was a reaction to everything else people were hearing.
"It's like everything in the news cycle is so negative and there's just no support."
The principal put it simply.
"This is our way of giving back to somebody who gave a lot to us."
It was not just one school.
Across the city at Clara Barton Elementary, one of the first 10 schools that got air conditioning from him, kids chanted QB1 at a pep rally and wrote him letters. Swoop, the Eagles mascot, showed up to carry them to him.
Their principal said this.
"He showed us so much love that we just felt the need to show him love back."
And all the way down in Channelview, Texas, where his mother works in the school district, students made him get well cards. The district declared Monday Jalen Hurts Day.
Here is the honest part. Nobody has said exactly when he will be back, and the team has said very little.
But the kids did not need an update. They just needed him to know.
