Excited to share our new working paper: how much did the US standard of living really rise over the twentieth century — and when? With @bhwittenbrink
Using 5.1 million Sears catalog listings, we build a quality-adjusted price index for consumer goods, 1900–1990. Two headline findings: growth was much larger than official statistics imply, and its peak came before WWII, not after. (1/9)

AI is increasingly used to find errors in research. But which ones actually matter and deserve our attention?
Our new paper with @ellliottt and @sergallet maps the logic of economic models into claim graphs to assess how much an error changes their conclusions.

Very happy to share that our paper with Rafael Di Tella and Ramiro Gálvez (@RamiroHGalvez) has recently landed in JEBO!
In this paper, we study whether varying access to Twitter/X during a presidential debate affects political polarization.

🧵1/10 Given the recent reactions of mathematicians over rapid advances in AI, I think it is important to remember that technological change has historically been a very personal event for people.
Over the history of technological progress, looms have fallen silent, switchboards have gone dark, and factory lines have shrunk bringing with them a human crisis of identity and what it means to be a master of one's craft.

I hate this slide every time it comes up, and now from CSAIL
This has been false since before the slide was made. Automated systems make management decisions all the time (trading, logistics, customer service, insurance) & pretending they don't actually launders responsibility.

To everyone who claims there's too much math in econ, worth reminding them of this quote attributed to George Stigler:
"Math does not have symbols for confused ideas"

I refuse to believe that the most egregious case yet of academic AI-slop involves a guy whose last name is "No slop" spelled backwards. Simply cannot be true.

Replying to @dandolfa @gguillaumeblanc
Agree. I would just read the paper and referee it. Is there an original and important contribution? Are the arguments and results right? Is it well written? I don't see anything wrong with researchers using AI to be more productive. If the authors stand behind the paper and disclose how they used AI, I don't see what the Pangram score adds.
