When Safe Choices Become Dangerous in FPL GW 12 will go down as one of those weeks. You know the type.. everything makes sense on paper, you feel great about your moves… then the game reminds you it doesn’t care. This week, we saw three massive, collective decisions made by the #FPLCommunity. 1) Gabriel >> Van Dijk. excellent fixture run, most nailed Liverpool defender over the festive chaos, occasional attacking threat, Defcon magnet, this is the moment Liverpool finally tighten up. (Of course, he conceded 3) 2) Captain Haaland. If there was ever a week to take him on, this was supposed to be it. But the majority stayed with Haaland anyway. he’s on fire, City look inevitable, he’s chasing a personal 100 goals milestone, Newcastle were leaking goals recently… …and nobody wanted to look stupid if they ignored him and he slapped down a hat-trick. (Of course, he blanked) 3) Buy Mbeumo. Suddenly you must own a Man Utd midfielder. Bruno or Mbeumo. Preferably both. Even for a hit. Everton shaky. United finding form. Fixtures tasty. Mbeumo became the most transferred-in player of the week. (Of course, he also blanked) So the million dollar question… “Is the popular choice always the right choice?” No. And also yes. For me, depends on how you arrive there. Scenario A: The Blind Follower You own Gabriel, you need a replacement. Everyone (Content creators, friends, your cousin, that guy from Reddit, someone on X with 34 followers).. is buying Van Dijk. So you copy. When it flops,it’s: “How dare they mislead me!” “They ruined my season!” “Oh my god Liverpool will concede 3 every GW for the next 5.” And of course: “I need to sell both immediately!!” “Success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan.” (Tacitus). When something goes well, everyone wants credit. The moment it fails, “I only did it because others said so!” Scenario B: The Informed Decision-Maker. You evaluate first, before listening to pods, reading articles, drowning in voices of social media. You see the upsides of doing all 3. But you also see the risks. Liverpool’s defence hasn’t been tight all season, Newcastle at home are a different animal, United might still be the old United. So when all 3 blank, yes, it hurts, but you breathe and say: “I knew this was possible. It’s fine. I’ll ride it out.” Because the choice was yours. So the consequences are also yours. Same decisions. Same results. But completely different emotional outcomes. Because decision-making isn’t just about the selection. It’s the story behind. It’s not about avoiding popular picks. It’s also never about being different for the sake of being different. The real takeaway is: Make your own decisions. Own them. Win with them. Lose with them. But let them always be yours. This week, the herd got burned. Next week, the herd might feast. That part we can’t control. But our process? We can. #FPL #FPLCommunity
