“The Singularity” isn’t a point where everything goes infinitely fast; it’s the point beyond which things are so different, no meaningful predictions can be made. For those of us who are bad at predictions, it’s already here.

Idea for a video game: “GirlDad,” where you are the father of one or more little girls. Gameplay: You walk around your house and pick up loose scrunchies to return them to the scrunchie jar. That’s it.

Your 1st grade daughter reveals to you that some days ago, a boy student slapped her across the face at school during supervised recess, and she went to ask a teacher for help. Now, upon hearing this later, as her parent, you write a letter to the school inquiring about the incident. Which of these responses would reflect WORST on the school's faculty and administration?

Unlike you RUBES who have been manipulated to find this sort of thing impressive and inspirational, *I* am a HIGH DECOUPLER who uses his superior intellect to perpetually rise above things like GIVING CREDIT WHERE IT’S DUE, or really any socially affirmative response whatsoever
Real life, baby

the problem with some people spending their money on things that are inspirational to other people is that those people end up being inspired by them so we must use positions of influence to convince more people to be resistant to inspiration, I guess?
i'm told i should find this incredibly exciting but it just seems like thousands of man-hours wasted on a silly pointless stunt. catching the rocket was amazing and practical this is... just ok, sure, whatever. maybe i'm wrong?

I knew I wasn't the top claude token user at the office but a manager gave me a look at the list yesterday. I'm just outside the top ten, using almost 10x what the median user does. However, the top user is using over 20x what I do on a monthly basis... yes, 200x the median.

eventually you get old enough that you realize the grownups weren't kidding when they said you'd get "stuck like that" if you kept making that face, bc you've seen many people actually, for real, just get "stuck like that." sometimes forever!

at only one hour per dimension, it's actually a good use of your time
Electromagnetism, viewed from a gauge-theoretic perspective, looks eerily like the fingerprint of a fifth dimension. (Kaluza-Klein theory). 5-hr deep dive: youtu.be/hcL3yJ03jQQ

Listen, you need to be jevonmaxxing. You need to be computing and inferencing. You need to be lighting and cooling. You need to be utilizing bandwidth. You need to be ubering across the city two blocks at a time
The age of the taxi is over. The age of the ride-hail passenger carrier is now.

As we all know, free speech is everyone's constitutional right, but it also causes a lot of harm. But that does not have to be a problem. Here is how to solve all issues with free speech! Why not deal with the 1st amendment in the same way as we deal with the 2nd in California? So, absolutely, you have the right to free speech, as long as you: - Are at least 18 yo, not a felon and there are no previous speech complaints about you, especially from spouses and neighbours - Bring 3 good character witness reports, at least one from your closest relatives - Get through the background check - Fill in an application, which is different in every county, takes a few months to process, and costs about 1000 USD - Take an 18 hour course on speech safety (renewable every two years with a 6h class) Now you can exercise your constitutional right to free speech, with a few reasonable restrictions: - The speech cannot be anonymous and must always be traceable to you - No speech in public buildings (schools, libraries, government buildings, hospitals, universities), parks and adjacent parking or business establishments where the owner does not want you to speak - No speech can be longer than 10 words at a time - For things that you want to say in public, you cannot use amplification or repetition devices - For things you want to say in private, the state has an acceptable list of things you can say; the list has not been updated in years but when new things to say are invented, they can be put on the list in the future if deemed safe - No speech may cross state boundaries; every state has different rules - You can now go to a licensed speech dealer, apply for the speech you want to make, do the paperwork and wait for a cool-down period of ten days Someone might have the idea that some things in this list are too restrictive and perhaps not fully aligned with the constitution. That is of course not a problem: you can sue your state and within a few years, the suit may reach the supreme court. If the courts decide to strike down some of these rules, we just make new ones.

Elderly family member was getting rid of his computer and asked me to "destroy the information" (wipe the disk, I guess). He's had this iMac for 14 years. He's used 13MB of disk in his home directory. The entire rest of the disk is just a pristine OS install.

in a teams meeting with customer, and someone started making an analogy of 2 versions of vendored hardware as apples: either "red delicious" or "honeycrisp" and its slowly becoming clear that half of the people think "red delicious = mealy & gross" and "honeycrisp = tasty", and half think "red delicious = classic, reliable, real" and "honeycrisp = new, faddish, fake"

I get that “ham-fisted” is, strictly speaking, more vibrant as a metaphor, but “ham-handed” has that alliteration and head rhyme going for it and I’ll always prefer it

“completely”
Replying to @KarlPfleger
This completely changes my perspective on the feasibility of ethically creating higher-order-brain-less clones for parts harvesting or for head/brain transplants into complete young replacement bodies, an strategy for treating aging long advocated by the "replacement" crowd.
