"Uncertainty means something else in science and in the general public. In communications, say what you know and how you know it." Very rich keynote by @GaleSinatra #EARLI2023, took away a long reading list and some practical tips ⬇️
At @sUUstainability conference, panelists argue that an important step towards impact is to check your finances. How is @UniUtrecht doing, for example, in the choice of collective health insurance?

Professor Tamara van Gog of @owk_uu @UniUtrecht wins the prestigious NWO Vici grant (one of the largest grants for individuals in the Netherlands, 1.5 million) for innovative research on improving students' self-regulated learning.
AMAZING! So proud.
33 researchers receive a NWO Vici grant. The laureates will examine, amongst others, why children can stubbornly refuse food. Another project will focus on cascades of abrupt climate transitions and biomaterials for 3D-printing of narrow kidney tubules: nwo.nl/en/news/33-researcher…
#klimaatalarm Nijmegen. Meer aanmeldingen dan plek in Valkhofpark! Dus corona-proof demonstreren vanaf huis.

Wow! National youth poet @TheAmandaGorman at the inauguration! Als ik docente Engels was, zouden we morgen in de les samen luisteren en onze favoriete citaten kiezen :-) youtube.com/watch?v=CdKdyemx…
Colleague @MonikaDonker defends her PhD Nov 20. She studied teachers’ behavior and physiological responses (heart rate) during lessons. Teachers who show agency/leadership and friendliness/warmth in class, tend to report more positive and less negative emotions. However, (1/2)
(2/2) Physiological stress common during teaching; in different situations for different teachers (e.g.,being dominant or friendly emotional labour for some). Emotional regulation and classroom management strategies important to cope with prolonged stress. bold.expert/teaching-can-mak…
Colleague @EvaJans71783717 gave a laymen's talk today about her research on teaching (teachers teach) critical thinking and avoiding reasoning bias. PhD defense Nov 13. uu.nl/agenda/promotie-kritis…
Reviewing paper. Decent methodology & potentially interesting findings but theoretical sections of terrible quality- unclear structure, wildly mis-citing, overgeneralising, vague. (How) can I comment without disheartening a (probably) beginning writer? #reviewer2 #AcademicChatter
In the mail today. Thank you, @EarliSIG7 (and earlisig6). Some volunteers in the family want to use the bag, too :D
Maandag promoveerde dr. Raudszus (@scivole) @Radboud_Uni over leesprocessen bij 1e en 2e-taallezers. Woordenschat NL én thuistaal bleken belangrijk voor leesbegrip. Technisch lezen was even goed in beide groepen. Tip: Onderwijsbrochure op henriettepromoveert.nl/onder… #trotseparanimf
This week @earli_office #Sig2 meeting. Ondřej Javora just presented results that making a learning game customizable had no effect on students' learning outcomes or preferences for games. Surprising? But in line with earlier results that 'nice graphics' dont always help learning.
Tim van Marlen from @owk_uu just presented on students' physics learning from videos with male/female models at #SIG672020. (Unfortunately) clear stereotypes among students that males are better teachers, but in reality, (luckily) learning outcomes were comparable for all models.
New (OA) paper about word learning with keyword mnemonics (ezelsbruggen): Repeated retrieval practice reduced use of keywords; recalling words without mentioning keywords during practice predicted better posttest recall. Article based on Mirte Dikman's thesis #proudsupervisor
Paper: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.… Careful practical recommendation: keyword mediators seem to support encoding new words (retention was excellent in study); but it may help to keep practicing retrieval until you can recall words without first thinking of the keyword.
First ride in electric car yesterday using carsharing initiative @Drive_Amber 's new ehub in Nijmegen. Very excited about the experience, highly recommended! Photo: A small orange ladybug was sitting on the cable to wave us of. Looking good against the orange logo/car..
Thesisstudenten zouden in april data verzamelen op scholen. Thema: Zelfstudie/overhoren motiverender maken voor woordenleren. Nu staat het onderzoek online voor volwassenen! Meedoen? tinyurl.com/onderzoeksessie1 #UUgotthis
