My career advice is just do it. Make it. Say it. Bring it to life. Whatever it is. The crazier your idea, the bigger risk, but bigger reward. There are plenty of people who warn, even threaten, to keep you in control. The world is filled with the you shouldn't do that folks. They're not your audience, and the world is bigger than their echo chambers. You don't need their acceptance or permission. Just yours.

Visual eqing, while precise, comes with the side effect of carving too much out of a mix. Mixing by ear means lots of the frequency overlaps in sounds remain.

This is really a side effect of modern mixing and mastering than anything else. Plenty of fat warm stuff you can listen to on Bandcamp.

03, The Game woulda already has his mixtape with Memphis Bleek out by then. Funny though, I don't remember the beats being very easy coast.
2003 was the year that I noticed a LOT of L.A. rappers were using the NY rap style. That’s when I first heard The Game, and all of his Black Wall Street camp def used that style. I went to a few Rap battles around L.A. that Summer, and over half the rappers sounded NY influenced

Media support is absolutely needed to foster superstar status, but imo the REAL convo is simply the innovative ideas, unique pov, sound and leadership just aren’t there. We are seeing new stars being propelled in every other genre except Hip Hop.
Recapping the feedback from my Next Rap Superstar Conundrum article and according to you we don't have a new rap superstar because... 1. Rap has been deprioritized/no investment 2. No artist development 3. The music isn't good enough 4. Rap fans are haters.

When “indie sleaze” was actually happening, it was just called indie. But as the era gets repackaged through playlists, party photos, and Pinterest boards, the Black artists who helped shape the era are being left out. @Santigold, Spank Rock, and @kilokish shed light on the scene they experienced, the boxes the industry put them in, and how the people telling its story shape what gets remembered. Read the full feature by @precious1otus here: pigeonsandplanes.com/read/wh…

Something else to take from this story. The level of math completed for a Physics bachelor’s degree makes you very flexible for anything based on math fundamentals. Try and study something that offers flexibility.
It feels surreal hearing older generations explain how they landed the jobs that eventually became their careers

No songwriter, producer or song creator should want radio to die. This is where most of your biggest residual payments will come from.
They’ve been saying this for years but Choosin Texas still came outta nowhere to dethrone Mariah Carey That didn’t happen with socials babe. Half of us didn’t even know the song existed - but guess who did? The millions who still listen to the radio.

There is a lot to learn from electronic music artists right now. Keeping costs low, building a true relationship w/ audience, innovating on IRL experiences.
Replying to @BrianZisook
That gives you time to answer to no one, improve your craft, and call your own shots. No one tells you what to release or when. That autonomy lets you build a solid foundation brick by brick. You can also use this time to build-up and own a database of your fans. (Leverage.)

The future of a lot of art and entertainment is much like the past. Lived in the moment, Instant, fleeting. Streamers gave us a roadmap. Watching loozecannon hold 40k people on a tiktok live as temu MJ nightly is insane. Arguing either way Timbo over a giraffe 🦒

If you sign a record deal, don’t recoup, and the label releases you from your contract, you owe them nothing. They can’t garnish future wages or foreclose on your property, and your credit score isn’t affected. If you take out a bank loan and fail to repay it, you’re f**ked. 🧵
Why tf would any artist sign a 5 album deal for a $100k advance in 2026 when brand deals, bank loans & crowd funding exist? Wake up. These people in these buildings do not know how to break your single. They take that marketing budget and go contract someone your age to execute the campaign. Might as well get rid of the middle man and own your art.

I think we are in need of a new delivery mechanism. Not sure we’ve had the same listening format this long (in modern times)
Crazy thing now I see a lot of these suits in the music industry moving on from their current artists/ writers/ producers and focusing on helping others with catalog sales. What does it all mean?

The issue not being discussed is that catalog not new artists is driving majority of streams, so why invest in new execs an new talent when Hip Hop music older than 3-5 years is the majority of the revenue?
And THIS is part of why the music industry is in the state it’s in today. You cannot profit from Black music and culture while sidelining the Black women and executives who help shape it. Cultural knowledge, artist development, and creative vision are not disposable.
