I sometimes hate that the last third of my life has consisted almost exclusively of sitting around looking at my phone. but then I think of how my ancestors lived, sat around looking at potatoes or something. compared to them I am winning, and winning big.

A lot of people seem confused as to why supermarket freezers are connected to the internet, and it's actually a pretty simple answer: remote temperature and energy monitoring. If a freezer starts to fail (say in the middle of the night), you get an automated warning notification so you can send out someone to repair it, or at least save the products by transferring them to a different freezer. The monitoring data is useful for monitoring performance for predictive maintenance as well. Finally, since refrigeration is the largest energy consumer in a supermarket, connecting the fridges to the internet allows operators to easily optimise the energy consumption of hundreds of freezers across multiple locations and even identify inefficient equipment/stores. Connecting a commercial freezer to the internet is not as stupid/unnecessary as connecting a home appliance. What is stupid though is that these places are not always taking cyber security seriously (credit to @eurochallenges for the anecdote):

Refrigerators and freezers but they aren’t connected to the internet.
BREAKING: This morning’s cyberattack against supermarket fridges and freezers has now spread to Belgium, Sweden, Luxembourg and Estonia. The hackers increased the temperature up to 50C. Food worth millions of euros has been spoiled. Experts warn that such cyberattacks on supply chains and logistics can constitute a threat to national food security in many Western states.

Why can’t hackers do something useful and relatable? Don’t be fucking around with freezers. Hack into Mastercard and wipe out all evidence of spending. Lower the prices at petrol pumps. Shut down Microsoft Teams, or takedown Outlook for 72 hours. Win hearts and minds!
🚨 NEW: Britain is on alert to protect Tesco and Sainsbury's fridges amid cyber attacks on similar fridges across Europe Hackers are remotely accessing them and turning temperatures up to as high as 80C

Xennials. We are Xennials. The end of Gen X and the beginning the Millennials. We are in our 40s and think we are still 20, which is a problem when your back randomly locks up. We can name most songs from the 80s to about 10 yrs ago. We still think the 80s was only 20 yrs ago.
There was a whole generation between gen x and millennial, born from around 80-85, who are different than everyone else.

UPDATE: The European refrigeration cyberattack has now reached Italy and Romania, bringing the total to at least 10 countries affected across Europe. In Italy, several Coop stores in Sicily were hit, including at least three in Catania and one in Palermo. In Romania, at least six stores have reportedly been affected. Some affected businesses have yet to publicly disclose the incidents, meaning the actual number of countries and locations impacted could be even higher. The full scale of this cyberattack remains unknown. Countries affected so far: 🇸🇪 Sweden 🇧🇪 Belgium 🇱🇺 Luxembourg 🇪🇪 Estonia 🇮🇪 Ireland 🇳🇱 Netherlands 🇫🇮 Finland 🇩🇰 Denmark 🇮🇹 Italy 🇷🇴 Romania
UPDATE: Since our last update, two more countries have reported disruptions to supermarket refrigeration systems, bringing the total to seven countries affected across Europe. 🇸🇪 Sweden and 🇧🇪 Belgium appear to be among the hardest-hit countries, with multiple supermarket chains and stores experiencing significant disruptions and food losses. 🇱🇺 Luxembourg has also reported incidents affecting Delhaize stores. 🇮🇪 Ireland has seen refrigeration disruptions at 13 SuperValu stores, forcing chilled and frozen products to be removed. 🇳🇱 The Netherlands has reported incidents at at least 17 businesses, primarily smaller retailers, butcher shops and food-storage facilities. 🇪🇪 Estonia reported a cyberattack targeting refrigeration controls, with freezer temperatures reportedly reaching +50°C. The incident was detected and addressed within approximately 10 minutes, preventing major damage. 🇫🇮 Finland has reported only minor, limited-scale temperature irregularities in some K Group stores. The situation there appears significantly less severe than in other affected countries.

There's nothing Gen z about this, she's right. Your non-working days should not be counted as part of your annual leave. Is the HR okay?
There’s a Gen Z lady at my workplace who applied for 4 days of annual leave. Her leave started on Thursday, and she was expected back on Monday. But she resumed on Wednesday. When HR asked why she added two extra days without approval, she calmly explained: “My leave started on Thursday. Friday was my first leave day, Saturday and Sunday were weekends, and Monday was my second working day. I still had two working days left, so I used Tuesday and Wednesday to complete my four days.”

Londoners quite often speak like this, actually
All three surviving Traitors in the flame-lit final episodes of the BBC's Celebrity Traitors pronounced the word 'traitor' as 'trai'or'. They'd been 'recrui'ed', for better or for worse, and had 'had the hea' pu' on them' at various times throughout the series. 'This is the final murder and it's really impor'an,' said Maya Jama at midnight in the turret. 'I'm not goin' down wivou' a figh'. I'm ge'in' shivers,' said Kenny. ✍️ Ysenda Maxtone Graham Article | spectator.com/article/celebr…

BREAKING: Estonia is now the latest country hit by a cyberattack targeting supermarket refrigeration systems, following incidents reported this morning in Belgium, Sweden, and Luxembourg. Hackers reportedly accessed the control system of a large supermarket chain and remotely raised a freezer's temperature to +50°C. According to Kitman Coldtech CEO Jann Mutso, several clients in Estonia have been targeted. The attack exploited vulnerabilities in older refrigeration controllers. The incident was detected and addressed within approximately 10 minutes, preventing major damage. Major Estonian supermarket chains reportedly using the affected technology include Selver, Rimi, Coop, and Lidl.
