The optimal packing of 12 squares is much nicer!
Thank you to @jatloe for sending me a full proof of the result alongside a partial formalization, and thanks to all of the square packers who helped finish the formalization

If you are wondering whether your website is affected, we have packaged a Codex skill to help check.

OpenAI models helped researchers—operating as part of our Patch the Planet initiative—discover critical security flaws in PHP, an open-source programming language used to run an estimated 70% of websites.
Over the past two months, we led a coalition of maintainers, researchers, and security providers to prepare fixes and protections ahead of disclosure. This duration was necessary because the fix was quite intricate and required a major change to the PHP engine. Every site using PHP can now safely upgrade their version to stay secure, in addition to applying mitigations from various security vendors.
Due to the severity of these flaws and PHP’s widespread use, we consider this bug to be one of the most impactful vulnerabilities in recent memory. It also marks a new phase, where AI can find security bugs with internet-scale impact.
This is an example of the Defender’s Window in action: to our knowledge, frontier AI was able to find this vulnerability ahead of attackers, giving defenders time to prepare.

Readers added context they thought people might want to know
OpenAI may claim a role in the coordinated response and patching process. But the initial discovery and exploit development, however, occurred several months earlier by an independent researcher.

TERENCE TAO:
“OpenAI did make a major breakthrough [on quasi-Riemann Hypothesis] the biggest advance on the subject in 50 years. A massive new zero-free region, very clever new technique.
Well, it’s sort of a combination of three or four existing ideas, arranged in a very unusual way. It’s not something I think any single mathematician alive would have come up with.
I think if you got the right people to work together and locked them in a room, they might have come up with this after lots of trial and error.”

We discovered a sophisticated recording device that was hidden inside one of our offices. We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier. We referred the matter to the FBI, and we’re grateful to the agents and prosecutors who moved quickly to make an arrest. The FBI’s investigation is ongoing and we will continue to support their work.
At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data. The employee was terminated.
We take protecting our technology, data, and people seriously, and as a matter of national importance. Our security program is designed to protect against a wide range of threat actors, from insider risks to cybercriminals to nation states, and this case is an example of how AI can help address these sophisticated security threats.
Next time you need to fit 17 square cookies into a square bag, here's how to do it!
Just three weeks after Marc Leonard Overbeck (@kleddamag) threw himself into this problem, he proved that John Bidwell's 1998 packing really is globally optimal. The speed of progress is almost unbelievable.
Having talked with him personally, so that I know how many long, exhausting days he's spent in front of his computer working on this.
I'm genuinely happy to see all that hard work finally pay off, and to celebrate this moment with everyone involved!

I think the genuinely correct take here is that three things are true at once:
1. Absolutely you need confidence in any technology you use in high-stakes situations
2. Whether they come from AI or any other source, opaque certifications do not lead to trust
3. But you can build trust in complex systems through transparency and layers
A good analogy to what is happening in mathematics now (and no doubt soon in biology and therapeutics) is what has happened over a couple of decades in open source software.
The Linux kernel is extremely complex. In the beginning, it was not reliable. And it has led to numerous bugs and security risks. Even now, very few engineers understand all of it.
Yet today, most of the critical infrastructure we use in the cloud is based on Linux. We have developed a transparent system for building layered systems of trust, managing risks by having different sets of people understand different components.
Even if model capabilities are exponential, the actual development of these layers will take time, just like they always do. We will not instantly get magic solutions via AGI. If we treat any technology like a magic black box, we will have failures and accidents.
But if we roll it out in a sane way, managing risks and understanding what we're building, we all benefit, just like we have with dozens of other extremely complex technologies, from software to gene therapy.
Late last night, I had a two-hour call with my friend Kleddamag. We talked about everything from the Square Packing project we're working on together to life in general, and it was such a lovely chat!
But I also realized just how much I still struggle with the more technical parts of our conversations. Even just keeping up with the discussions in our Square Packing group chat and making sure I understand everything correctly can be quite a challenge for me, so I still turn to AI for help every now and then.
Still, I guess my English isn't doing too badly as a second language. I mean, I managed to chat entirely in English for two hours straight, and that's a little milestone for me.But it's not quite enough yet. I really wanna get to the point where I can use English as a working language without constantly feeling held back by the language itself.
Still a long way to go...
You got this,zhou
