Like the VPN thing. It’s basically permitted you’re just not supposed to admit it publicly. Not sure how I feel about these sorts of open secrets at a national level. Like a Santa Claus fable but overwhelmingly practical
Replying to @j4la4b

I hate seeing dudes play basketball in running shoes. Like bro you are genuinely risking permanent damage. Flat bottom sneakers like Air Forces or converses are fine but shit like Onclouds with a tall soft foam midsole you are just asking for it

really, most of system design feels normie to me. imagine people spending months preparing to crack interviews, memorizing kafka, caches, load balancers, and every other existing abstraction. why aren't we building new runtimes, deriving invariants from first principles, and translating research papers into fundamentally different computational substrates? existing systems are bloated, and we keep stacking more complexity on top of them. everything gets optimized around existing infrastructure instead of questioning whether the underlying execution model is even right. with AI changing the economics of software, we need entirely new levels of computation for different classes of problems, not another architecture diagram assembled from the same old building blocks. what are we reinventing system design for if not to build fundamentally better systems? at some point, system design stopped being about discovering better ways to compute and became about preparing for jobs. big tech ruined engineering curiosity.

In HS my dad and I were arguing with my mom about camping the fast lane. My mom said she’s “preventing” others from going over the speed limit. We said that’s retarded. Changed my life. Before I thought those ppl were just unaware and slow. To think they feel moral superiority…
I’ve heard progressivism described as sitting in a long traffic line, getting a green light and letting someone from a side street merge in front of you. Yes you’ve done good by the guy you’re looking at, but you didn’t even think about the guys waiting in line behind you.

Not exactly related to the quoted post it just reminded me of this story. This would be the auth-lib axis rather than the prog-con axis

Ppl seriously undervalue coordination/touch/“skill” as a hereditable trait when discussing athletic gifts. I was thinking about this watching Ty Jerome play and then Bam/Giannis hoops. Just sickening to watch. Not just a dark vs lightskin thing either. Consider Kyrie/SGA/KD

I joke around about how monogamy ruined my life but realistically polygamy did way more damage. I just never realized the consequences until I gave monogamy a shot

Getting incredibly high energy comes down to having a superior biology + a mind capable of using said energy. Unironically, both things are possible if you only do things that interest you and reject everything else in disgust; that's the left hand path btw.

I thought this as well while Opus 4.7-5 were flagship. I thought Anthropic was cooked. Out of compute regressed from 4.6 trying to make a Hail Mary regulatory capture play with Fable. But then they came back and dropped 5.5 like Jordan in 96. Such is the Mandate of Heaven
"as long as they have" is the correct wording. and I think that "long" is soon to be over. And then what? Then hyperscalers eat Ant alive.

the best way to understand any engineered system is to trace: - 1 bit of information - 1 joule of energy - 1 newton of force from source to destination. once you can do this, your engineering task becomes much simpler. you will probably solve 5 or 6 problems on accident as you try to trace these flows.

Old friend from college visited Chicago this weekend. Hadn’t seen him in 5 years and honestly I was a little embarrassed given everything but once we linked up I felt completely at ease. Male friendship so beautiful If we were brothers once then we’re brothers always. I miss 2017
