On the night of October 29–30, 1937, Stalin’s NKVD executed 132 people in Minsk. Among them were Belarusian poets, writers, scientists and teachers.
Yuliy Taubin was just 26. Valery Marakou was 28. They were publishing books, translating foreign authors, falling in love and making plans. They should have had decades of life and work ahead of them.
Their books were banned, their manuscripts burned, their names erased from textbooks. The regime wanted people to forget they had ever lived. Some of their work is lost forever. We will never know what else they might have created.
Today, Belarusians are again imprisoned for their words and views. Books are banned, and cultural figures remain behind bars. When I think about 1937, I cannot help thinking about the families living with fear in Belarus now.
But the poems that survived are still being read, translated and set to music. We can still hear these poets speak about love, friendship, joy and uncertainty. We can recognise something of ourselves in their words.
On this Night of Executed Poets, I ask you to find one of their poems. Read it to yourself or someone you love. Learn about the person who wrote it.
We cannot return the lives that were taken. But we can keep their words alive and work for a Belarus where no one is punished for what they write, say or believe.

🚨 Pentagon refuses to investigate Starlink disruptions in Ukraine. Senators demand answers about Musk's role
Nine US senators — four Republicans and five Democrats — called for an investigation into who was behind restrictions on Starlink and Starshield satellite communications, which Ukrainian officials say hampered efforts to intercept Russian drones.
However, the Pentagon's inspector general declined to launch an investigation and referred the senators to the US Air Force, according to the Associated Press.
The senators wanted to know whether US officials had authorized the restrictions, whether they knew about them in advance, and how the disruptions affected Ukraine's air defenses and warnings of incoming threats.
Senator Jeanne Shaheen said the Trump administration and SpaceX had provided conflicting explanations for the disruptions, making an independent investigation necessary.

Democrats are going to win the House, they’re probably plus 15 on seats.
Republicans are pulling money out of certain races and they’re moving it into Senate races where things look closer.
To flip the Senate, you need Maine, Texas, and Kansas is in play. Every one of these races is inside the margin of error.
But I’ll say something people aren’t going to like: Trump under-polls.
People get asked “are you voting for Trump?” They say no because they don’t want to be perceived as a racist, don’t want to be seen liking someone unpopular.
Then they close the curtain and vote for him.
He’s constantly been under-polled. Which means he has a real chance to keep the Senate.
